Since November I've been put on levothyroxine as I'm hypothyroid with hasimotos, my highest TSH was 90 my last bloods a couple of weeks ago my TSH only went down to 70 I'm now on 100mg but my symptoms all seem worse and I'm gaining weight rapidly?? I'm also low on vit d just in range with iron and b12.

Nikkig83 As you have Hashi's, are you gluten free and supplementing with selenium to help reduce the antibodies?

Also, are you supplementing your low nutrients? If you post your results suggestions can be made to optimise your levels. These all need to be optimal for thyroid hormone to work properly.

As your TSH is 70, you have a long way to go as it should be suppressed as you have Hashi's. You will need continuing dose increases every 6-8 weeks (following testing) until your TSH lowers.

When you have blood drawn for thyroid tests, always book the very first appointment of the morning, fast overnight (you can have water), and leave off Levo for 24 hours.

As above, it may be some time before you're on sufficient meds, but in the meantime ensure you're having bloods done and meds adjusted every 6-8wks as your tsh was so high. Otherwise if the gp takes their eye off the ball and leaves you three or four months between appts it can be a long hard struggle.

Can you gain weight with thyroxine

You can if your tsh is 70! Or if it fails to relieve your symptoms and you continue to feel hypo. It shouldn't be a problem once you're on the right dose of the right meds.

Don't be scared. What would be scary is if we had no alternative to levo.

These are different kinds of meds: thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/treatm...

We can suggest supplements for vitamin D, iron and B12 if they are needed.

Have you got the results? If you have perhaps you could post them with the reference ranges (and do you have any other nutrient results e.g. folate?) then we can tell you what you need.

If you haven't got the results then ask your surgery if you can view your results online. If the answer is yes you will have to register to see them, and you will need proof of identity to get the information you need to register online for this service.

If the surgery doesn't allow people to see test results online, then you should ask for a copy of the results including the reference ranges.

Doctors do (sometimes) prescribe supplements to raise nutrients but they often prescribe tiny doses which won't raise levels this side of doomsday. Doctors aren't taught about nutrition at med school.

It is a good idea to get copies of blood test results of all kinds because you will need to start taking an interest in your health to help you feel the best you can. Keep a folder of your results and don't give them away to anyone - take copies if you need to show them to a doctor to discuss them.

Do tvbumo too soon onto another medication. Levo works very well of many people but they don't post on here! You need to get such things as minerals and vitamins dortedxfirst as they need addressing what ever you are taking do consequently o would. Oncentrate on working with what you are taking T the moment. Hopefully though I'm not holding much hope but it would be really useful if you could get an FT3 result. Presently you may we be undermedicated but if you are t converting the inactive T4 to the active T3 that ecery sell in your body need you. We'd an FT3 reading to confirm this. I got mine almost perfect by addressing minerals and vitamins but it doesn't happen overnight but takes several months to get there though is improving slowly as you progress.
