Hi everyone, I'm a Newby as I've only just discovered this site.

I'm a 54 year old female but had a partial thyroidectomy when I was 7 years old. They started me off after that on a tiny dose of T4 and over the years I've gradually increased to 200 mcg levothyroxine daily. All has been OK until I hit my menopause in the last year. No flushes but constantly hot. serious brain fog, tinnitus, breathlessness, lethargy. I went to see my GP but saw a locum who dropped my dose from 200 to 150 mcg daily.

I feel like crap, have gained weight and have felt quite depressed but all they keep saying is that my "range is normal".

Feeling battle weary and would like to try natural thyroxine.

L--A If you obtain a copy of your latest thyroid test results and post them, with reference ranges, members will be in a better position to comment and make suggestions.

Assuming that you are in the UK then you are legally entitled to a print out of your results under the Data Protection Act, so ask your surgery who !Ay make a small charge to cover the cost of paper and ink.

It would also be useful to see results of any nutrient tests you may have had, if not done then either ask or do private tests for

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

I would query why you were actually ever given any T4 following the partial thyroidectomy. I believe that the standard practice (at least it was for me in 1989 anyway) that time was given for the remaining tissue to start to work again, as it is said to do. Nothing you can do about that now, but it would be interesting to examine you latest blood tests to establish if any change can be seen in the willingness of those tissues to reactivate following so many years of being overwhelmed with synthetic T4. Is this something you could discuss with your doc/endo?
