I have been hypo since around 2004. I do alot of exercise - have done for 20 years (less so when had a bad batch of chronic fatigue and vertigo) and have been slim for the same length of time. I am ALWAYS starving, more so since 2012 when i started dosing myself adequately. I eat (graze) constantly throughout the day and on top of that have 4 to 5 meals. I do eat super healthily, so lots of fruit and veg and it's true that doesn't fill you as much as meat, eggs, etc. I eat more than anyone i know, including men. In fact....I am hungry right now.
It may have to do with the fact that most of what i eat goes through me - i haved lived with chronic diarrhoea for over a decade. Had coeliac diagnosed in 2012 and went g free which helped alot but my gut remains sensitive, it seems i have ibs on top of coeliac. Also when i am stressed it goes straight to my gut - instant diarrhoea.
This probably doesn't really answer your question.
Thanks . it is prob coz it goes through you then as you say..
Ive only noticed this in the past 2 weeks, !
Hi joannec123, Im having this problem at the moment, two hours after eating I'm weak and shaky,I'm not feeling too good at the moment, which is making the hunger worse,it's so frustrating, no chance of trying to lose weight when we feel like this !!
Bev.
Hi joannec 123 and Beverleyb
This is of interest to me too. I have Hashimoto's (diagnosed at the beginning of last year) and your symptoms sound really similar to mine. For me, the symptoms that were particularly getting me down were headaches and you call it "hunger", for years I referred to it as "hypoglycaemia", it came with the headaches and like hunger made me feel jittery and like I had very low blood sugar (seems to be exactly what you are describing Beverleyb. Yes, it could happen very shortly after I had eaten.) All I would want to do when I was like this was eat....and eat....and eat...... And when I did eat it soothed the headache a bit but then an hour later I was back to square one and the headache was really bad and I would want to eat something else. I am interested to know, does your "hunger" come hand-in-hand with a headache??
Hi MacG, I used to get bad headaches and migraines, not so much now,I think the strong pain relief tablets I'm taking for my knee keep them at bay. I have been "hypoglycemia " for as long as I can remember, sometimes I go so weak, eat and have to lay down to recover!
A little post script to our discussion about hunger/hypoglycaemia.
I have read that something called "reactive hypoglycaemia" can be one of the symptoms of Hashimoto's. Just looked this up on the NHS choices website. "People without diabetes can sometimes experience hypoglycaemia if their pancreas produces too much insulin after a large carbohydrate-based meal. This is known as reactive hypoglycaemia".
Right at the end of the list.......almost as an afterthought....... it mentions thyroid conditions as a possible cause of reactive hypoglycaemia.
It is something that I would like to look into a bit more as it is a symptom that can trouble me. Trying to combat it at the moment by being really careful with what I eat - seem to be having some success.
Hi!
Yes I'm hypo and I feel hungry a lot of the time. Like you I've put a bit of weight on too. I've read the replies to your post and a big thanks to you all! It has been very illuminating!
I’m not really sure if I’m actually hungry but I can’t stop eating so my weight is always a problem, I also used to suffer migraines a very lot but when I started the menopause they stopped that was 13 yrs ago and I’ve had about 2 mild migraine attacks since, to answer a question I never feel quite well I’m always tired but when I go bed I toss and turn so I usually get up and have a cold drink and sit downstairs for a few hours, I’m on 50mg of levothyroxine a day my blood test came back ok in February and it’s now July
Yep...however fatigue comes with the hunger or before it...eating helps for about 45 minutes...weight gain is most upsetting despite eating spinach, carrots and healthy foods
