Anxious and starting to get depressed. - Thyroid UK
Anxious and starting to get depressed.
Hi there,
So sorry to hear this.
Can you tell more about your situation? What did your labs say, with ranges? What medications are you on? And how long have you been on klonopin? Do you have a long history of anxiety or depression?
Your folate level could be low. You might need GABA or some amino acids. There are some other things I can think of, but a little more info would help.
Hang in there...
I posted the labs and ranges. I take levoxyl 150mcg and klonopin which I received a week ago. I also take metformin for insulin resistance my Endo said I can stop until I start to feel better. I'm just lost right now and it's taking a toll on my mental. I've never suffered from depression or anxiety. No life changing events that would make me feel this way except my Thyroid, I'm so ready to feel like my self I would do anything. I feel like I'm going crazy!!!
You are only over medicated when the FT3 is over range. When thyroid levels are low then being emotional and tearful can be a symptom .... Try to do something special today .... just a short walk could help you ....
Just read your earlier post - as was mentioned by greygoose your T3 is low.
In your last post, you gave your results - although you didn't say if they were before or after the last reduction - and your FT4 was over-range, but your FT3 wasn't even mid-range. You are a bad converter. Therefore, you need your FT4 to be well over-range to get enough T3 to make you well. You now don't have nearly enough T3 and therefore you are suffering. And, those symptoms are going to continue until you either get your T4 increased again, or add in some T3. Personally, I would recommend adding in the T3, because you do not want all that unconverted T4 hanging around in your blood stream, causing problems.
You doctor should have known that if he reduced your dose of T4, your T3 was going to go down, too. And, it is low T3 that causes symptoms like depression, etc. If your doctor doesn't know that, then he knows nothing about thyroid, and is going to make you very, very ill. You either need to change doctors, or take your control of your health into your own hands, and self-treat. This isn't going to get better by itself, it's going to get worse. You need to do something. And all the GABA and amino acids in the world won't help if you don't have enough T3.

Went to the ER last week because I was doing so horrible. I'm an emotional wreck. I have never suffered from anxiety or depression. Regardless of where my thyroid levels have been I've been ok until my doctor said I was over medicated. I've gone from 224mcg, 200, 175 and now 150mcg of levoxyl.
My TSH Reflective in the ER last week was 0.73 the range 0.27-4.20 I don't know what reflective means. They didn't do a T3. My T4 1.17
I just need help.
Any other lab work beyond just the thyroid?
Metformin depletes folate and B12 which can certainly make you depressed. Also CoQ10, which can impair energy production in your brain.
Try a low carb diet, like Paleo, with adequate protein, needed for neurotransmitter production. Get rid of sugar and starchy foods which negatively effect brain function.
You could try Thorne Neurochondria, with brain friendly nutrients and lots of B12. Ramp up first 1 pill for 2 days, then 2, then 3.
Then add Thorne 5-MTHF 1mg. Try for 3 days. If still anxious/depressed, go up 1mg for a couple of days and reevaluate.
Most people would only need 1-3mg in your situation. While you can't really overdose on B12, too much (or too little) can cause serious health problems.
You might also try a high quality multivitamin, some fish oil, and 200mg a day of high quality CoQ10.
And more T3.
Hope you feel better soon!
I agree with greygoose.
I have been swapped from being on T3 and T4 to just T4,and it's not working,I'm not converting. The result of my T4 ,100 mcg is 19 so below the maximum ,but I know it is just too much, it is sitting in my bloodstream giving me palpitations and sweats and pushing up my blood pressure.
It's all about getting the right balance for you.
