TSH 3.17 (0.27-4.20)

Free T4 14.92 (12-22)

Free T3 5.16 (3.1-6.8)

Had another test last week and all in range but low Folate.

I feel dreadful. So tired, ice cold, dry hair and breaking nails, put weight on for no reason, brajn fog. I really thought it was my thyroid but these are all in range. :(

Skyrocket,

Hypothyroid symptoms can precede abnormal thyroid results by months/years. TSH 3.17 indicates your thyroid is struggling to maintain FT4 and FT3 levels. Unfortunately, NHS will not usually diagnose hypothyroidism until TSH is over range (usually the range which your GP practice uses).

How low is your folate?

Serum Folate 7.1 ng/mL (3.9 -26.8)

I have felt ill for ages and feel gutted that i probably won't get help. I have too much to do in life to feel this rough

Skyrocket,

Folate 7.9 should be adequate. Have B12, ferritin and vitD been tested?

skyrocket in reply toClutter

Serum Ferritin 114 ug/L (12.0 - 233.0)

Serum Vitamin B12 Above Range 851 pg/mL (191.0 - 663.0)

Serum Folate 7.1 ng/mL (3.9 -26.8)

Serum Total 25-hydroxy Vitamin D level 152.6 nmol (25OH Vit D = 50 nmol Sggests VitD Sufficiency

I was supplementing high strength vit d3, folic acid and b12 and K2 up till xmas time. So i expected B12 and D3 to be high.

Skyrocket,

No problems there. If you are supplementing vitD you could reduce dose, you don't want it much higher than it is now.

Hi skyrocket

Your TSH is far too high, your FT4 is in the lower third of the range yet your FT3 is close to the top third. So what T4 you have is converting to T3 OK.

Your thyroid is struggling and in some countries you would have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism with that TSH.

Have you ever had antibodies tested? If you had over range antibodies then that would confirm autoimmune thyroid disease aka Hashimoto's and Dr Toft, leading endocrinologist and past president of the British Thyroid Association, recommends starting Levo to 'nip things in the bud'.

Not had my antibodies tested. It's going to be a struggle to get the GP to listen to me so i guess it will be another private test. We shouldn't have to fight so hard to get help

Thats bizarre. When i looked back over my GP results they said my TSH was:

Serum TSH 0.83 mU/L (0.27 -4.2)

Were the tests all done at the same time of day and fasting? They can only be compared accurately if conditions were the same.

So if you did your BH test first thing in the morning and your GP test in the afternoon, say, then the TSH would be quite different.

The BH was first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (6am) the Gp one around 11.30 after food. That probably explains the difference then

Yes, it does explain the difference. TSH will be higher earlier in the morning and fasting, lower after food and later in the day. So your GP test shows a lower TSH because it was near midday and you'd eaten.

So, next step is TPO (Thyroperoxidase) antibodies, which you may be able to get done by your GP.

Also TG (Thyroglobulin) antibodies which is rarely done by the NHS.

Unfortunately, to do them privately is going to cost £69 :(

By the way, folate is best at least half way through it's range so you should be aiming for 15.35 with that range. You're not deficient at 7.1 but you are on the lower side.

skyrocket I am sorry to hear that you are still going through the mangle with all of this. Sadly, your GP blood test doesn't help with being done late am and after food.

It's hard when you feel so drained and ill to hold it all together, whilst finding out about your condition and jumping through all of the hoops as well. My GP acknowledged that because I have symptoms, despite being borderline she would prescribe levo. So, if you can get another appointment and use the Dr Toft reference (the Administrator's usually post who to request this from) and try to be clear and firm, you might well get more support. You are entitled to ask for a trial at a therapeutic level.

You won't want to hear this, but if you can also get both antibody tests done it will identify if it's Hashimoto's. I requested these from GP but didn't have faith they would do them, so got the BH thyroid +6. As it turned out my GP did do the antibodies test (though I have yet to get the results), and I did the BH test 45 mins before those at the GP. I realise this is more expense and might be difficult, so try the GP first. Mine were significantly over range and so it has given me something to stand my ground with.

Sending you best wishes.

Thank you for your replies. I really appreciate it.

I am virtually gluten free as I stopped all gluten as it puffed my face up, makes me itch all over and generally makes me bloated and feel rough. For the antibodies test should I eat gluten beforehand or not? I know it seems a funny question but as I understand it the antibodies (if I have them) can be affected by gluten so in the interest of getting a diagnosis I am wondering if it;s better to abstain or go hell for leather :D

Now that's a question I can't answer definitively, but my gut (no pun intended) suggests you go back on it??? Wait though till someone else answers that one - I'd hate to sabotage your efforts and make you feel worse than you already do:) It's already tough.
