Any help greatly appreciated. Ive been using Naturethryroid for a couple of years now purchased from USA myself. Last test by gp has tsh3 0.01 and t4 17. Just got the results today so havent discuss with her yet. Are these bad? Am I taking too much and could this be causing more weight gain?

thanks so much x

Malone1,

Can you retype the TSH result please, I'm not sure whether you mean it is 30.01 or 0.01 and do you have the ref range (figures in brackets) for FT4?

Malone1,

TSH is suppressed which may lead your GP To suggest you are over medicated. Unfortunately, you really need to see FT3 when taking NDT because as long as FT3 is within range you are NOT over medicated. FT4 17 is probably within range so you could tell your GP you are not over medicated if s/he says TSH is too low, but I would order a private FT3 test to make sure.

Just tell her the pharmaceutical companies have been good at promoting levothyroxine but some people need the 'old fashioned' thyroid hormones which have been in use since 1892, so have been used far longer than levothyroxine.

You can give her a copy of above for information. Maybe if she gets hypothyroidism she might prefer an alternative. :)

Just remember that if you have been buying your own thyroid meds you aren't dependent on your doctor and can take what you like and how much you want. If you do this though your doctor may refuse to test your thyroid again.

But don't despair. Quite a few of us treat ourselves, do our own testing privately, and feel better than we would do if we had to rely on the NHS. I never discuss my thyroid treatment with my doctor any more.
