When you say insides, can you describe it?

Sorry I can't help, but I go through phases where I have a similar feeling. I notice it mostly on waking up or lying down and it is very unpleasant. I would describe it as inner trembling and have always blamed it on my back problems, but maybe someone can help on what this is. Sorry to hear you have this problem. I have an under active thyroid and have been on 100 mcgms of Levothyroxine daily for 20+ years. I'm not sure what Zantac that you take is? Hope you get some answers. 😊

I'm not any meds, I have a multi-nodular goitre, but I have been having what I call internal vibrations for years. I've given up asking about what they are. I can go months without the shaking inside feelings and then months with them. I'm currently going through a months with them period. Until the medics accept that some people can and do have internal sensory issues, where they are aware of things happening internally in their bodies, we are just going to get blank faces staring back at us. It's only taken 20 years for the autism medics to accept internal sensory issues as being a part of autism, so we have a way to go yet. But yes I know exactly what you are talking about.

I can join the "inside trembling" brigade from time to time also my thighs tremble as well ?

Essjay16 profile image
Essjay16 in reply to Sam75

I am undiagnosed but have an appointment in two weeks. For nearly four years I have been to the doctors and described an internal tremor (sometimes my thighs shake too) and doctor said he had not heard of that before!, as well other symptoms like cold and heat intolerance, muscle/joint pains, fatigue, tinnitus and more. Been tested twice two years ago and I was "normal". The next appointment is with a different doc and I HAVE to get to the bottom of it this time. I have three family members with hypothyroid (Hashimoto's ).

Clutter profile image

Essjay16,

Arrange your thyroid blood tests early in the morning when TSH is highest and fast (water only) because TSH drops after eating and drinking. Ask for a printout of the results with the ranges (the figures in brackets after the results) and post them in a new question for advice.

Essjay16 profile image
Essjay16 in reply to Clutter

Thank you so much for that info. The only appointment I could get was 10.30 am with this particular doctor but I will make sure I don't eat before. Can I also ask you please? I take supplements vit d (cod liver oil), evening primrose oil. I have stopped the following for my appnt, sublingual b complex and kelp for a true reading. Is this the right thing to do please?

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply to Essjay16

Essjay16,

Except for kelp which is high in iodine there is no need to stop taking the supplements if the blood test is only for thyroid levels. I personally would not take kelp unless I had tested deficient for iodine as iodine can lower thyroid hormone T4 and T3 and raise TSH.

Essjay16 profile image
Essjay16 in reply to Clutter

Clutter, thank you so much. I may be imagining it, but since I have stopped the b complex my energy levels seem lower than before. Just hope my appnt on the 10th gets me some help. I appreciate your help.

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply to Essjay16

Essjay16,

Why not resume the B Complex if you felt better taking it. B Complex vitamins won't affect your thyroid levels.

I definitely will. I have no zest, no get up and go whatsoever.

I got it for a while. I associate it with maybe taking too much Levothyroxine, but that might be co-incidence. I didn't take any for 3-4 days and the shaking went away so then I started taking it again.

It's called internal shivering and it's one of the symptoms of underactive thyroid.. read Dr. Barry Peatfields book on hypothyroidism. It's very informative.

I had what I call thrumming, as if every cell in my body is sitting on a miniature motorbike. This started when I got m.e and has gone after several years and I think stopped after I went to t3 only. If I take NDT I get it again, so I have put it down to something to do with rt3 and my body not being able to access t3 or rt3 getting in the way etc. That's just my experience and logic.

Hi,

The first time I took OTC Zantac, I felt as though I was standing on my head, & looked like a beetroot. Subsequent doses did not do this, so it must've given my body a shock.

My jaw & ear vibrate, when my TMJ is tight. This feels like a phone vibrating on one side. My friend with Graves says she had a similar sensation when her overactive thyroid "chirped".

Im not sure if this is relevant but I once took niacin ( vitamin B3) and within minutes I had the "beetroot" affect. I took it at lunchtime and couldn't return to work until my face had returned to normal. You might want to check if one of your medications has niacin(B3) in it and cut back a bit. I take a multi B vitamin with B3 in it and, apparently, it doesn't have enough to cause "beetroot face".

Another possibility is hypoglycemia - low blood sugar - without being a diabetic. An accompanying symptom that is almost always never mentioned in lists of symptoms but is a good tell-tale sign will be tingling / pins and needles / numb lips and sometimes the tip of the nose. The control of your blood sugar levels is determined in part by thyroid and cortisol and if you have a problem (imbalance / deficiency) with these, then you may get non-diabetic hypoglycemia. In the context of hypothyroidism, it is not recognised by the NHS - trust me on this one!!! The best way to deal with it is to be very careful about the amount of carbohydrates - especially simple carbs (sugar et al.) - that you eat and when. A relatively low and steady intake of complex carbs (starchy and vegetables) helps me avoid the hypoglycemia.

Hi there swmartin,

I also suffer badly on inside shaking or tremors. Is there a blood test I can take for shaking. It is getting worse.i have told doctors, pain consultant I get the impression they think I'm making it up.u mention sugar I do like my sugar 3spoon full and I drink a lot of tea any help would be great many thanks.

swmartin profile image
swmartin in reply to Chance15

Are your blood sugar levels - fasting glucose and HBa1c - are being tested on a regular basis? If not, get them done - there should be no problem getting these tests on the NHS since they are obsessed about T2 diabetes. Tests for hypoglycemia are normally done in a day visit to the hospital and are VERY difficult to get ordered. And even if the tests show that you suffer from hypoglycemia, there is no treatment except paying very careful attention to your diet and when you eat.

If you are long term hypothyroid (and possibly with adrenal issues), then blood sugar control may be a problem. Try to cut the amount of sugar you're taking in (it's VERY bad for you anyway) and reduce simple and starchy carbs as well. Also with high blood sugar levels, be careful of the amount of fruit you eat. Essentially, a paleo diet is best (meat and veg!!)

I have shaking on the inside, my B12 was hovering between 200-300, i recently supplemented and increased it to over 900. I think my nervous system was oversensitive and what was actually happening was that my heart rate was running high. My main problem is insomnia but since starting CBT, it seems to be settling. Docs kept saying it was anxiety/depression but when one GP explained that high adrenaline levels were connected to symptoms of increased heart rate, insomnia etc. I have since been able to understand how to tackle it. I'm really hoping that things are on the up now , I had been praying for an answer for months.

Hi, I've suffered with ME 20 yrs and feel so full of electric 24/7, continual tinnitus, muscle jumps, pins n needles right side, raised heart rate as some of symptoms. Never eases. I feel as though every system on over drive like out of balance. What did the cbt do to help with this for you? Do you have any advice. Much appreciated. Thanks

Ashmac profile image
Ashmac in reply to glasscaves

The CBT seems to be helping me to sleep better allowing me to reduce lorazepam. the advice that I got was around breathing and relaxation techniques to switch form sympathetic to parasympathetic or maybe the other way round. Basically around reducing adrenalin which I'm guessing helps me to sleep better. the heart rate is still jumping high but the muscle twitches and tinnitus are lessening. Im guessing the heart rate and adrenalin are still high as I am still not sleeping more than three hours at a time but then I have other issues at night such as small children. Also I am trying to stay well fed and hydrated.

Thank you for your reply. Something I do which might help a little, is I put sunglasses on about an hour and half before bed. Also listening to my kindle on slow speed helps. It's horrid waking and being so alert you can't get back to sleep, isn't it. You having small children must be wonderful but difficult. I remember when ours were little. Take care and thanks again

Thank you for posting this question and thank you everyone who contributed possible explanations!

May I suggest to test blood glucose levels with regular readings at home -- the GP's diabetes blood test shows average values, and extreme blood sugar highs that plummet to extreme lows still add up to an average normal. Test out different carb foods at i. e. 15/30/45 mins after consumption and compare the readings to your symptoms.

Yes I have that, I am hypothyroid after thyroidectomy a long time ago. Its like a trembling but sometimes its like Ive got an electrical current buzzing away, usually in the legs. Am also suffering from adrenal fatigue and I am sure when am sorted out that these things wont happen.

I've had that for about 18 months now, came on after the GPS started messing around with my Levo doses. Dread going to bed at night knowing it will probably wake me up in the night. I also get restless legs the minute I lay on my side to sleep. These thyroid symptoms are just so draining.

I'm actually experiencing the internal tremors as I type this - I too have been getting it for the last couple of years but I now know mine is due to being under medicated or when I've shocked my adrenals. What I mean is that of adrenal fatigue - it's a very common symptom and in any high stress situation whether it be push too hard with exercise, bad argument with someone, missing sleep, drinking alcohol etc and I get it. Your adrenals need a little salt (preferably Himalayan) and vitamin c, I tend to have the adrenal cocktail (found on this website or by googling). Stress management can help like breathing techniques, yoga, meditate, Pilates. It's very irritating I know. Hope you get some relief and help through this site x

I too have had this 'inner trembling ' , it's horrible. I'm amazed drs don't know about it, so many of us seem to have it. I personally think it's an unpleasant side effect of levothyroxine, as mine started when I first took this. Also, stress makes it worse.

I noted several people have mentioned taking vitamin E. If you are a smoker/have ever smoked, this may be risky as there are possible links with an increased risk of lung cancer. I'm an ex smoker so I don't take it. There are various articles online. Here's one:

I have what I call my collie wobbles. I only used to get them now and then but just recently had them more frequently. GP just checked blood sugar and cholesterol and these were both spot on so not that. Today Ive had blood test for b12 (at my request). I have started getting anxiety attacks recently so don't know if this is connected but when the collie wobbles start I don't really feel anxious. xx

I get inner vibrating affecting all of body, evening time. Feels to me like being plugged into an electric socket on a low voltage. Nothing to see outwardly so no evidence it is happening. Not the same kind of shaking low blood glucose (I am diabetic also) will bring on. Recently started getting a buzzing just around inner thighs. At first I thought it was my mobile switched to vibrate. This buzzing is not unpleasant but curious. The vibration is unpleasant.

I suspect I need my meds adjusting upwards so the internal trembling, which is confined to my torso, could be that but I also get them just before a migraine aura. I take beta blockers for migraine prevention. The low blood sugar link is interesting as I always have a cold nose. Lots to consider, thank you.
