Blood Tests

Hi I have had bloods that showed I had a problem with Thyroid, had Scan and Biopsy on Nodule which was benign and they're keeping an eye on it. But then bloods showed normal. Have aching joints, brittle nails sometimes feel jet lagged and tired but not always??? I am also gluten free due to wheat intolerance which causes Migraine irritable bowel etc..... When I have the next blood test should I ask the GP to do anything in particular regarding my Thyroid?

Many thanks

Next time you have your blood test, ask the doctor to test TSH (pituitary hormone, beloved of doctors), FT4 and FT3 (thyroid hormones), and TPOab (antibodies). The antibodies will tell you if you have autoimmune thyroiditis, in which the levels will go from under-active to 'normal' and back again.

Make your appointment for as early in the morning as possible - before 9.0 am. Fast over-night, just drink water.

Ask for a print-out of the results when you see your doctor to discuss them. Never ever accept his opinion of 'normal', 'fine' or 'ok'. Post your results on here, and let us have a look, and we will tell you what you need to ask your doctor next.

Many thanks greygoose this is most helpful!!! I shall certainly look forward to having the next bloods and to how he reacts to me asking for these. I think I am within my rights to ask but can he refuse?

He most certainly can! Unfortunately. And, even if he agrees, the lab can over-ride his instructions. But, if you don't ask, you don't get! So, ask anyway.

Gaynor, all I can say about those results is that your TSH is too high.

If i were you, I would post a new question, with those results, because very few people are going to see these new results on this thread, now. But, don't forget to put the ranges. :)

Even if he does you can, if you can afford it, have a private blood test and TUK have a list of recommended labs. Many members have found this useful for being diagnosed.
