Recently diagnosed with hashimoto's. Should I wait until my B12 is at 900-1000 (it's currently at 473 ) before I begin taking T4?

annabhaird No, don't wait. Once you are supplementing B12, if you want to re-test you need to be off the supplement for 5 months to get a true level.

If you've already started taking B12 then give it a week or two and if no adverse reaction then add in the B Complex.

Thanks so much for your advice SeasideSusie.

Have just started on B12, it contains Methcobalin, only taking 2000 IU in the am, Have to say I'm feeling really unwell since I started them. Could it be the B12 I wonder? Take it after breakfast which includes flaxseed oil (organic) and coconut organic oil.

I'm waiting on the B12 Jarrow brand and the Jarrow B Complex to arrive in the post.

Which B12 are you taking then?

It's called B12 Fix by Uni Pharma. Bought in Greece. Ingredients manitol, sodium cyclamate, Raspberry flavour, Magnesium Sterate, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Dicalciun Phosphate

It could be one of the ingredients you are reacting to so I'd stop it now and see if things clear up. When your Jarrows come, check the ingredients against the UniPharma ones and if there are any the same watch out for a reaction.

I take it you're not taking anything else supplement/medication wise it could be reacting with?

No, just supplements that I've been taking for years without any obvious reaction. Thanks so much for your responses. Working in the morning so need sleep!

Hi SeasideSusie I too have just had my diagnosis of hashis and you have given me advice on previous posts. I have started levo 25 and my GP will retest my bloods in 6 weeks. I asked my GP if I should take any supplements and he told me not to at this stage as they can screw the results and he wants to see them in my body's natural state. I'm so confused as I've seen countless posts about the need for supplements yet I'm being told not to take them..

you are only been asked not to take them for a short while, is your gp going to do a full screening of your vitamins and minerals? if so then it will give you a better foundation to build on as you will know exactly which you need to suppliment.

oh that's maybe why he said he doesn't want me to take anything. Thanks for your speedy reply. To be honest due to brain fog in really finding it difficult to understand all of this. I keep going online to educate myself but then find myself confused and sometimes I can't focus on what I'm reading to the point it all gets mixed up.

That's Dr for you they do t do supplements, they have no idea how much supplements and food can help us it's really ironic when my Gp said I'm putting foreign bodies in)to me by using B12 patches!,, his answer if I developed PA is to give me injections now I may not be medically trained but won't that be a foreign body?? And puncture my skin and cause me pain or am I missing something cause in not as cream cracjered by keeping my b12 and other B's up by supplementing g rofl

Good luck x

ChrissyS1 What results are your doctor saying will be screwed? Thyroid or vitamins and minerals?

If he means vitamins and minerals then yes, I agree. I suggested you get them tested to see if you have any deficiencies as you said you had pins and needles plus muscle and joint stiffness, and if they did show deficiencies then suggestions could be made for supplementing. I didn't suggest supplementing before you had them tested. The exception being selenium as that is recommended when you have Hashimoto's as it helps reduce the antibody attacks, amd it's doubtful your GP will test for that, it's not routinely done.

The only way supplementing will affect your thyroid is once your vits and mins are optimal then thyroid hormone can work properly, this is particularly so with ferritin which needs to be a minimum of 70 for thyroid hormone to be able to work.

Thanks for your reply, when I have the tests in 6 weeks what vitamin and mineral tests should I ask for or will they run them as standard..

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toChrissyS1

ChrissyS1 The ones I suggested to you in my reply to your other thread here healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

They're rarely done as standard so it's best to ask.

I see from your new thread that your Vit D is 84. That's OK but the recommended level is 100-150 so I suggest you follow the advice Clutter has given you in that thread.

Annabhaird,

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before or 2 hours after food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.
