What exactly is Nutri-Thyroid? I recently found out about it from a friend who told me she had been on 125 mcg levo but changed to 3 grains of Nutri-thyroid after seeing Dr Peatfield. It is described as a glandular supplement but does it contain any thyroid hormones or does it just work as a placebo? Can anyone enlighten me please?
Nutri-thyroid?: What exactly is Nutri-Thyroid... - Thyroid UK
Nutri-thyroid?
I'd love to tell you. But I can't.
We keep seeing non-prescription desiccated thyroid products such as Nutri-Thyroid. Research papers have shown that some contain some thryoid hormone; others virtually none.
We do not know which makes contain what amounts. Whether they are consistent, measured doses between batches and over time.
This is the problem: If the manufacturer tells us then they are knowingly supplying a product which should be prescription-only but if they don't tell us, we don't know.
Are you sure you got the name right? Nutri-thyroid isn't usually measured in grains, I don't think. It is NDT that is measured in grains - Natural Dessicated Thyroid. From pigs.
My friend said she takes 3 grains. Nutri-thyroid in the TPAUK shop is described as coming from bovine sources in NZ!
From the makers of Nutri Thyroid -
"Nutri Thyroid provides hormone-free thyroid concentrate.
Thyroid concentrate contains the amino acids naturally present in the thyroid gland.
Each tablet typically contains:
Thyroid concentrate* 140mg
*Bovine source from New Zealand"

No mention of grains.
OK, no need to shout. She could have muddled it up with NatureThroid, which is NDT and comes in grains. Nutri-thyroid comes in mg.
Ah sorry I think it was Nature Throid. I thought it was a spelling mistake! 😊
Oh dear! Oh well, that clears that up.
Nature Throid is NDT. But I believe you already know what that is.
As seaside susie states it is 'hormone free'. Maybe it supports the thyroid gland but it isn't an NDT.
There is an NDT made in NZ invented by a USA scientist/doctor for people who cannot get prescriptive NDT from doctors. This doctor has now died and his widow runs Thyro-gold now.
Dr Lowe was also an Adviser to Thyroiduk.org.uk
Is there any point taking it if you are on Levo or NDT?
I cannot see any possible reason for taking it if you are already taking desiccated thyroid.
If you are taking levothyroxine, there could be some argument if the "other" substances present are of some benefit, but how on earth can you know whether or not it contains any thyroid hormone which would affect your levothyroxine dose?
It's very confusing isn't it, especially as some people seem to find it helpful. Too late for me though!
That it is. We have had numerous threads, some very long, about this very subject. None of them conclusive.
I always think my arguments look to be very much anti-Nutri-Thyroid but the truth is, it is ignorance that is the problem. If we all knew, then we could make sensible decisions.
Yes, but it turn out we aren't talking about Nutri Thyriod, we're talking about Nature Throid.
Wish companies would choose names that are so readily confused.
I'm sorry for the mix up. My friend did say she had a prescription from Dr Peatfield. Anyway I did want to know about Nutrri- thyroid AND I also have found out how to order some alternative brands of NDT if I don't get on well with Thiroyd. Thank you!
