NDT / T3 and breastfeeding?

Hi,

I've just been wondering if NDT or T3 are safe whilst breastfeeding? I started NDT two weeks ago and it's only just crossed my mind. I know levo is safe. My son only feeds 2/3 times a day ashes a toddler but even so I'd like to be sure.

misslissa,

...[ ... Will taking my thyroid medications harm my baby while I’m nursing? ? .....

Apparently not. Research shows that the thyroid hormones you take only cross over into your breast milk in minute quantities.

Conversely to being harmed, there are first hand accounts that switching to natural desiccated thyroid can increase one’s breast milk supply, which in turn provides better nutrition to the growing baby. In the book “Breastfeeding and Human Lactation” by Riordan and Wambach, they state “If replacement therapy of thyroid extract (another name for natural desiccated thyroid)… is adequate, the relief and an increase in the milk supply can be quite dramatic ” ... ] ....

Thyroid hormone in human milk is too low to influence plasma thyroid hormone levels in the very preterm infant.

Well pre preg I was poorly but during pregnancy I was the healthiest I'd been in years. I was undiagnosed until 2 1/2 years post baby!

T4 14.9 (11-23)

T3 5.1 (3.1-6.8)

If you didn't have hypothyroidism you'd be breastfeeding and your body would produce all the hormones that NDT does. I'm sure it's fine but if anyone knows differently they will respond.

Yes, very true. I wonder what effect being undiagnosed does during breastfeeding. Maybe it's better I don't know tbh!

You might still have been producing hormones although much lower than normal. :)

I'm not medically qualified - have hypothyroidism which was undiagnosed/unmedicated for a long time.

After sub-total thyroidectomy at 14 weeks pregnant with my daughter, I was given 25 mcg Levothyroxine until she was 6 weeks old. I was then not given anything and lost my milk suddenly when she was 5 months old and collapsed one night when I went to feed her. I now know that this was cortisol related. Still no treatment until 19 years later.
