Frying pans?!

Last week I posted about my concerns for my boyfriend John, I was recommended not to use coated frying pans/aluminium. We love an omelette, but impossible to cook in anything but a coated frying pan. Has anybody got any suggestions?

Have you tried a good cast iron pan? Apparently they are amazingly non stick if properly seasoned. Not that I managed before...

I mean to season it properly...

Must admit I haven't vixvixvix. I have tried ceramic and a wok, but impossible to cook an omelette.

I had a beauty once that I never washed, just wiped it clean with some kitchen paper. Nothing ever stuck to it and it was black as the ace of spades... Then my daughter, home on leave after joining the Navy, decided to do me a favour and 'clean' it... with a Brillo pad! Totally ruined it! I had to throw it out and I've never managed to get another one like it... #heartbroken

Oh my god, that pan almost sounds like a dirty dream! They are so difficult to get that way!!! Poor you that it was ruined though ...

I cook mine is a really old cheap frying pan (the handle has now fallen off but there is no shame to it as I have had it since I was a student )but makes the best omelettes. Perhaps it is just, that it is now seasoned ?

Good luck with your search:)

What sort of frying pan is it Maud04?

He is showing some worrying signs of severe loss of memory and other symptoms. It's not that the frying pans are coated or aluminium, you just have to stop hitting him over the head with them!

Love it x

My omelette pan was old when I inherited it, and I've had it 50 years since then. I season it with salt rubbed round with a little fat on a butter paper, then wipe it out. Never wash it, just wipe clean with kitchen paper.

When I make an omelette in a stainless steel pan they always stick, will look out for a cast iron pan. Thank you realyfedup.

Excellent Treepie hadn't thought of Le Creuset, just hope I can muster up enough swing to knock John out.

cast iron, good cast iron I absolutely love my solidteknics ausfonte made in Australia pure cast iron with no rubbishy stuff in it gets better every time and will so outlast me - wish I'd always had pleasure of using them, don't delay buy some cast iron today. Also beware Teflon ironing board covers!

Ceramic...I bought a brilliant set of ceramic pans and pots from Aldi's a few months ago. The quality is up there with the top shops and fancy prices. Totally non stick, easy to clean and look quite smart. I bought a lovely blue colour but other colours were available. If they aren't in store at the moment? check their online site because some things can be ordered from there. x

I think you should check the Dr.Mercola blog, I recall reading about the evils of Teflon coating.

Try using virgin coconut oil in the pan is safe to cook at higher temperature and helps prevent sticking.

Hi Margo , I've just checked Aldi On line for the ceramic pots and pans that I bought and I cannot find them on sale. I paid £19.99 for 3 saucepans ( there are some for £9.99 but I cannot say how good they are sorry). Also I couldn't see fry and omelette pans the same !!! hopefully they will come back in a some stage. xxx

Kind of you Mango_555, I still have my ceramic pan, will practice a bit more on it before I buy any new ones. I like Aldi so will be keeping an eye out.

Mine are cast iron. It's many years since I cooked an omelette (now vegan) but I had no problem with the current pan - plenty of butter and not too hot. I don't think coated pans had been invented when I first cooked one!

I got a set of three cast iron frypans from a market stall for £7.00 several years ago, and they're good for induction, under the grill, in the oven, over a fire...

I sent a set to my sister, but she's less of a fan, so they're probably festering somewhere :-(

Netherton Foundry's products aren't cheap, but they're spun cast iron (so should be lighter) and pre-seasoned with linseed oil. They do one without a wooden handle, if you want to use in a very hot oven.

Thank you so much SmallBlueThing, I shall investigate toute-de -suite.

Those look good SmallBlueThing, shall need to check the weights.

SmallBlueThing profile image
SmallBlueThing in reply to SmallBlueThing

Just weighed my bargain set, and here's how they "pan out"...

6-inch 900 g / 2 lbs

8-inch 1190 g / 2 lbs 10 oz

10-inch 2060 g / 4 lbs 9 oz

So, the Netherton Foundry 8-inch frying pan is 10 g heavier than my conventional cast iron type.

You can often get the eco natural non stick type in TK Maxx. They also sometimes have cast iron ones.
