Hi, I have developed an intolerance to alcohol and suffer very bad headaches even if I drink one glass of wine, could this be from the Thyroxine?
Alocohol: Hi, I have developed an intolerance to... - Thyroid UK
Alocohol
Nannywendy,
It's more likely due to being hypothyroid. Reduced tolerance to alcohol is commonly reported.
I developed the same problem about 5 years ago, just a small amount would give me 'hang over' symptoms for days. I just don't touch it at all now but I understand that the problem can be in the liver's inability to detoxify (is it ethanol?) owing to a missing or low enzyme - ALDH as I recall.
Thank you , it makes me feel really unwell at times. I am going to stop drinking now and hopefully I will feel a lot better. (I only drink at weekends)
I have been worrying about this for ages but now it is making sense.
Hi there
I have the same issue. I like the taste of alcoholic drinks and have found eisberg wine and bavaria beer to be not too bad. The kopperberg cider is good on hot days but a bit sweet. The becks blue is horrible (but I'm not really a lager drinker)
I used to suffer if I had one drink so I stopped altogether. It is usually the thyroid NOT the thyroxine.
I can suffer horrendously the next day after a few drinks, and the effects can last a few days. I get migraines, so I've always put it down to that. I've very recently been diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's, so I guess it could be related to that and I never realized it
Also if you have candida overgrowth then the yeast/sugar in alcohol can worsen the condition, making you feel worse. sorry I don't know more than this but you could look it up if you thought it may apply to you. I found gin much easier to tolerate!

Who cares about alcohol, I love my clear head and value it. Went to a party Saturday afternoon, had a lovely time, only drink I had was non-alcoholic chilled Elderberry wine, very nice too.
Hi - I have exactly the same problem and it started way before I found out I was hypothyroid and started taking thyroxine. I have completely given up drinking now - although I never drank that much before I do miss social drinking on rare occasions! But the resulting headaches were so awful I just have to remember that and the temptation passes!
So I would 100% agree that it is thyroid related not thyroxine related.
