Hello everyone. May I ask a question as I'm going ever so slightly barmy?. I have sub clinical hypothyroidism and my right ear is almost deaf and the humming is driving me insane. Does anyone else have this and is there anything I can do to remedy it?
Humming in the ears. : Hello everyone. May I ask... - Thyroid UK
Humming in the ears.
It's another known symptom of hypothyroidism I'm afraid. Though one doctors often don't seem to know about. My other half's tinnitus cleared right up once she was on enough levothyroxine. Sadly that took some doing, as just like you she was initially told she was subclinical.
Have you made that appointment to get your 25mcg of levo re-prescribed?
I have it tomorrow. According to surgery it's on repeat but I will be honest I have been doubling it this week. Just wanted to see if it made a change. No ill effects so far
No, you're very unlikely to have any ill effects from 50mcg. If I were you I'd tell the doctor you've been taking 50mcg so that he/she can write up a prescription for 50mcg from now on. He/she might be grumpy about that, but often they go along with things and accept you need a raise in dose.
Tell him/her that you've taken advice from an NHS-approved thyroid support site (yep, the NHS recognise us though your doctor probably won't know that ) who've told you that it's best to have tests every 6-8 weeks until you're on the dose that resolves your symptoms.
Possibly tinnitus ,see your GP .
Nuttymummyoffour What are your levels of Vit D and B12 like? See livestrong.com/article/4220...
#seasidesusie I really haven't got a clue if I'm honest. Doc said Vit D was really low but b12 not sure. I ordered Blue Horizon tests on Monday so fingers crossed I get the pack in a few days so I can do bloods. I get so confused and frustrated with it all.
Nuttymummyoffour When you're at the surgery tomorrow, ask for Vit D result, you're legally entitled to your results (Data Protection Act). I would bet your level is low. Also ask for B12 to be tested. If you've read that article I linked to you'll see that low levels of Vit D and B12 can both be linked to tinnitus/ringing in the ears.
My mum has suffered with bad tinnitus for years which has driven her crazy. She recently did a B12 test on blue horizon and the results came back saying her levels were 'okay', but in reality they were at the very bottom of the 'normal' range so she has started taking B12 and her tinnitus has got so much better! Would definitely recommend taking it even if your levels are somewhat 'normal'.
My tinnitus got better when my B12 levels were improved. They discovered my very low B12 when my GP asked for more detailed blood testing after I'd had several infections and courses of antibiotics. Low B12 is known to have a neurological effect.
