Old mercury thermometers are no longer available for purchase.

There are some that contain a different metal - usually available on Amazon.

Hi elvera111, I tried one of these new glass thermometers (bought via amazon), but it was useless. It was supposed to have large easy to read scale (I could hardly see it - yes I tried a magnifying glass too ), and I couldn't get it to re-set. I sent it back.

I now use a digital type, which I calibrated against a friend's old fashioned mercury thermometer, ie they read the same temp.

By coincidence I have just used a Geratherm glass thermometer via Amazon from Walton Pharmacy in Surrey. It worked perfectly and cost just under £7.50p.

I have used the Geratherm glass ones with magnified scale and they are very good and accurate once you get the hang of resetting it! I had to put mine in a sock and swing it vigorously 😀

But - it breaks easily if you drop it. I have dropped two now and the liquid inside coloured my floor blue, so beware. I have now given up on these and use my old digital one which is ok, just not as exact as the Geratherm one.

Just for the record, mercury thermometers are available and eligible for UK delivery on Amazon. They have a glass mercury one for human use for £10.99

Hi, There seems to be lots of new glass thermometers available online, but if you want a mercury one, I would suggest buying a vintage one (in collectables) on Ebay. That's where I got mine. But if you break it make sure you don't handle the mercury.
