Heart rate and a good thermometer ?

There was a blog/question discussing heart rate (I have just been on it and forgotten which one it is already!) and a heart rate app was mentioned and I have just downloaded it and used it..... 75bpm ! Does anyone know if this is good or bad ? Don't really know much in this area ! Also, can anyone recommend a good thermometer ?

75bpm is actually a pretty good resting heart rate. I wish mine were anywhere near that! I'm having trouble getting mine up to 60 although it is now in the 50's which is a great improvement on 36 - 44 that I used to measure!

As for thermometers, I believe the old-style mercury ones are the best but I am prepared to be corrected. You also need to leave the mercury ones in place for a good few minutes for it to get up to temperature.

I hope that helps a little :)

On the app its in the middle range so I was a bit worried! We confirmed the accuracy of the app tonight with a blood pressure monitor and its only about 3bpm different which isn't bad !

Blood pressure was 138/82 which apparently is not that good....

How come yours is so low ? Can it even be that low ?!!

Hi, do you have the name of that app? I've looked through the App Store on my iPad and couldn't find anything. There are so many medical apps! I'd be grateful !

Of course ! Its 'instant heart rate' by Azumio Inc. I just searched for pulse and it was the first one that popped up. However I have an android phone so there may be less apps to choose from.

I have used this one and it is pretty accurate, even with my arrhythmia (which often confuses heart rate devices).

My heart rate is very low due to a combination of problems. One problem is hypothyroidism, which is why my heart rate is starting to come up a little now I have switched to NDT. Part of it is also because I am pretty fit, despite being obese! I walk everywhere, do karate and strength training so that keeps me fit ;)

I also have an arrhythmia where my heart sometimes stops beating for a few seconds, although my heart rate is still very low even when it's not missing beats. Luckily it always starts again on it's own. I've had this for at least 20 years and I'm still here :D Funnily enough, it seemed to start around the time I first started experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism, long before I was finally diagnosed. The arrhythmia also seems to have improved since switching to NDT so it's only missing the occasional beat, and not that often, rather than several in a row!

You cannot now buy mercury thermometers:

Since European Union directive 2007/51/EC came into force on 3 April 2009 the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) reported that mercury thermometers could no longer be sold to the general public. Shops holding stocks of unsold thermometers had to withdraw them from sale; mercury thermometers purchased before this date could be used without legal implications.

After breaking two mercury thermometers I bought this digital one which I am very happy with:

Ideal HR is between 60 and 80 depending on age. Also important to sit still or rest for 10 mins before measuring for accurate answer. If suspicious of something wrong then measure it a lot. otherwise now and again is fine.
