Where can I buy a mercury thermometer from?

I can't find one. I do my BBT with a digital one using the thyroidUK guidance.

You cannot buy mercury thermometers any more as they are discontinued as being unsafe due to the mercury content. We have to use digital ones now.

At a push you may be able to find the type with the red alcohol in like an outdoor thermometer but I'm not sure where to find one of those though there is nothing wrong with the digital ones

I'll stick to my digital one. I read that the mercury ones were more accurate, but I think that's wrong. Well ThyroidUK say both are good.

Very nice idea. A significant part of the design of mercury medical thermometers is that they can continue to display the maximum temperature even when removed for reading. (That's why we need to shake them down - a major cause of breakage and mercury release.) Alcohol thermometers, to the best of my understanding, do not do this - their reading drops almost immediately. So I have my doubts as to how practical they would be.

I have one of these. ( hope the link works!!!) It looks like an old fashioned mercury filled thermometer. But isn't. I have an old mercury one too and they both read the same temperature. So seem accurate/reliable.

If link hasn't worked! it is from amazon cost £4.?? Measures in *c and *f. From Germany (galpharam-or something similar)

This non mercury thermometer. Keeps the temperature (just like old mercury ones) until you shake it down. I take my temp at 5am and go back to sleep and it still holds temp!

I know a neat trick that returns liquid to start position after use.

.......... Place into sock. Hold open end tight and swing in a circle. The centrifugal force returns liquid to start position.

No sore wrists or wondering if thermometer is broken!!!
