I had a great boost this morning having received the result of a DEXA bone scan done last Week. The test was ordered for Hip and Spine Bone Densitometry............... The results indicated a normal bone density at all sites and nil Fracture Risk and no further follow up needed.. My Endo ordered it - I am on Armour Thyroid.Seemingly the T3 in our thyroid meds can affect bone density and is a risk for Osteoporosis. At the age of 75 yrs I felt elated not only for myself but also wondered .........
Does this add weight to the possibility that Armour Thyroid or other NDT is suitable medication for thyroid patients and indeed should be licensed here in UK? I would much rather obtain my meds here even if I do have to buy it myself, rather than keep sending abroad. However,it would be good to be available on prescription..... and certainly cheaper for the NHS than Mercury Pharma T3!!
So pleased for you Marfit that your DEXA Scan has shown good results. i really think that NDT should be licensed in this country. It is quite worrying having to order it from abroad as you never know whether you will be able to get it or not.
Thanks j_bee it certainly gives us a boost to get a good result doesn't it Yes,we do need to somehow get NDT licensed here .
Mind you, having just read the good post by Shaws on " Thyroid History " .........goodness knows how long it will take!! We'll likely be history ourselves by then !!
I think the culprit is due to too low a dose which many doctors prescribe in order to keep the TSH within range.
NDT is, as you know, contains all of the hormones our own healthy gland would produce and therefore, for many people, levo might not provide all they require. It would be great if it could be prescribed in the UK, but each supplier would have to go a process for it to be licenced. As it is a 'grandfathered' product there should really be no need and it has been proven to be beneficial since 1892.
Big Pharma as far as I understand made statements which weren't true in order to sell the 'new' 'perfect' thyroid hormone replacement i.e. levothyroxine and the authorities world-wide have fallen for the 'promotions'. In the USA I understand doctors are given monetary rewards for prescribing. Dr Lowe said corruption.
Thanks Shaws Yes it is certainly good news .I feel fortunate to have an Endo who sees beyond T4 Levo being the only thyroid treatment, believes in T3 being a necessary addition for some and will monitor me on Armour though he can't prescribe it.To also keep an eye on other problems that might arise by ordering bone scans etc gives me confidence in his care programme.Being able to acquire NDT here in UK would certainly be the icing on the cake!!! However....we will dream on.......for now !!
Yes I agree that low dosage in the early stages of diagnosis is at the base of many peoples' long term problems which could so easily be avoided.
