Does anyone know anything about parathyroid issues? I'm feeling like I have been hit by a truck and my symptoms are similar to what I"ve read about parathyroid. looking for more info.

Thanks

See parathyroid.com - excellent website written and aimed at us patients (so we can then teach and educate our medics perhaps?)

There is also an app - calciumpro.com - cost about £3.50 to download.

If you have your blood test results (all done on same date) for calcium, vitamin D and parathyroid, just put your data in the app and it works out wether your parathyroid issue is primary, secondary or tertiary.

Clearly explains the different causes of the three and the treatments necessary. According to this site (run by the Norman Parathyroid Centre in Florida) primary Hyperparathyroidism is the most missed diagnosis.

Slowdragon can I just clarify something, although the app may give a rough idea of the problem actually diagnosing the cause is far more complicated, it can take many many months and a lot of tests and scans to make a definite diagnosis, likewise treatment is not always straightforward.

Hi

Yes I realise it's not that "simple"

Actually I have found the other app the Norman centre has made, called "Vitamin D Pro" the more useful for me as my main issue is vitamin D.

This app clearly explains that secondary Hyperparathyroidism can (amongst other things) be due to longstanding low vitamin D/calcium (eg due to undiagnosed gluten/coeliacs).

In my own case I have been stuck for years on propranolol (one of the few drugs that apparently lowers parathyroid hormone), and recently discovered I had low magnesium (due to gluten?) as well. I suspect both these were lowering PTH, but my undiagnosed problem with gluten was causing low calcium/vitamin D, therefore raising PTH. (A right mess, no wonder I felt rubbish)

Going gluten free & taking magnesium supplement I have finally been able to stop taking propranolol. Feeling so much better too.

I never managed to get PTH test done (I gather it is expensive) but I doubt it would have shown a problem anyway.

Have you had calcium and parathyroid blood tests done ? The symptoms that come with parathyroid disease are very similar to thyroid symptoms so easily confused. If you have results to post either on here or hyperparathyroid.org.uk I might be able to advise.

Thanks all. No tests done yet. Have to try persuade the doc to do these tests, he is not a very willing character

What makes you think you have hpth ?

Dont know if I have it but experiencing symptoms that sound similar. Started about 3 weeks ago and seem to be gettng worse

Symptoms of hpth are due to hypercalcemia and wouldn't normally happen over a few weeks. As I said thyroid and hpth symptoms are very similar so easily mistaken. Your GP may agree to a calcium and vitd test for starters but PTH isn't usually done unless calcium is high, vitd and phosphate low. When you have those results I suggest you post them on our forum as above where we have info and hpth members to advise.

Hes only doing calcium for now. Ive been feeling tired for about 4 months but symptoms of body pains and acute dizxiness started roughly a minth ago, along with increased thirst and urination.

bantam12 knows a lot about PTH issues and runs a forum on the topic for people in the UK, iirc.
