hashimoto ,slow digestion: hello I wondered if... - Thyroid UK
hashimoto ,slow digestion
Usually, those with hypothyroidism (hashi's) are more likely to have slow digestion due to everything slowing down i.e. pulse, low temp etc (hypo).
What most of us have found is that supplementing with either a good Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with a glass of water or juice can be helpful at meal times. Also Betaine/pepsin tablets with a meal, particularly protein is helpful as both provide acid in our stomach which is essential for the breakdown of food.

Do you know if kifir milk is good for it or is it bad as it's milk? it's meant to be good for digestion but I'm not sure if it interferes with the meds
Aloe Vera is excellent for digestive help.. even the medical profession endorse it. I found a lovely one with cranberries added to it from Holland and Barrett's especially when the penny sale is on. They sell one without cranberries but the taste isn't so pleasant. Cider vinigar which includes the mother ( 5 litres for £12. from Amazon). (pre and pro biotics from Healthspan) also help. Make sure that you don't have a stomach ulcer if taking Betaine it isn't good for stomach ulcers. My gut issues have really subsided since following this regime. Also Home made organic bone broth. It as to be a lifestyle change. Best Wishes for a good recovery. x
Thanks I'm going to try them
That's good these things have really helped my digestion it's taken a few months but feel much better in my stomach. I am gluten free( for 8 months) and take Selenium along with other supplements. x
do you avoid cabbage and kale extra
I don't eat it any more along with other thyroid destroying foods. I recently discovered about high histamine foods that should be avoided such as tomatoes. That's worth a Google. x
There aren't any foods that destroy the thyroid.
I meant foods that don't help it like cabbage etc. I know people say cook it well and it's ok, but there would be no benefit in eating overcooked food. x
Yes, well, that only applies to people who depend entirely on their gland for all their hormone. Those that are on thyroid hormone replacement - and certainly those with no thyroid - shouldn't be affected at all.
What goitrogens do is impede the up-take of iodine by the thyroid gland, so that the gland makes less hormone. That's all. They Don't affect your thyroid hormone replacement in any way, and they Don't damage the gland in any way. And, if you want to know the absolute truth, cooking doesn't help at all. It's an old wives' tale.
But, even those not on thyroid hormone replacement will not be affected by all goitgrogens - and I'm willing to bet you Don't know them all, it's not just kale and cabbage - not all goitrogens affect all hypos.
So, Don't take any notice of it, just eat what you fancy. If you feel that something has a bad effect on you, stop eating it. But Don't avoid a whole heap of lovely food stuffs just in case. That doesn't make any sense at all.
NB : exception to all that is soy - you really shouldn't eat any form of unfermented soy.
yes!! I am unable to eat normal amounts, since going hypo in 2010..yet weigh more than i ever did in most of my life. I get full and breathless and have to make myself vomit, so i can breath properly. The problem is with motility, not acid. My stomach, does not move food through. No amount of fiber or vinegar of pills for adding acid or enzymes, will make it move faster. It is a different issue. There is no safe treatment for it. Getting your thyroid normal or if you have to stay on thyroid meds, then the use of t3 and clearing reverse t3 could help.
are you on levothtroxide
I have the same thing. Fiber and fat make everything 10x worse!
