Someone please help!

After having my daughter 12 weeks ago I've been having some weird symptoms, twitching all over but mainly in calves, tremor and a lot of weight loss.. Does this sound like a thyroid issue.. I'm literally at my wits end thinking I have some awful disease and would love some advice. Thank you

Are you sure that your weight loss is not a result of losing 'the bump' and signifying a return to your previous shape?

B12 deficiency can occur during pregnancy and could, possibly, give at least some of the symptoms you describe.  Other nutritional deficiencies could be responsible too - and the stress of having given birth isn't going to have helped any.  I'd be inclined to go get a 'full service' and ask your doctor to take the relevant blood tests.  Even if the results come back as 'within range' question just where in range you fit.  All things being equal, not all people are and some of us need to be higher or lower on the scale.

Disturbing as it is, worry isn't going to improve your condition.  You have valid cause to get proactive and check it out at your surgery.

I did at first but I've lost 5 pound in 6 days surely that's not normal.

It possibly isn't but I have lost as much as a stone in a single day before now - mostly down to hormones and water retention.  Of course when the hormones rebalanced themselves I put it all back on again :'(  So think about it but then store the idea away until you can use it.

Listen to shaws ' voice of experience but be prepared to stand your ground when you speak to your GP,  the nhs really does not like doing more than a TSH test .

I have a 'favourite saying' “Worry is like a rocking chair--it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere.” but I think in your case I should change it to “Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.”  It is easy to overthink a situation but the answer often lies in something really simple so try to turn your mind to enjoying every moment with your daughter.

Jayne88,

Ask your GP to check thyroid levels.  Muscle twitching and weakness, tremors and weight loss can indicate hyperthyroidism.

Is muscle twitching common, it's really getting me down everyday

Listen to Clutter.  She knows.

Jayne88,

Twitching can be due to a number of reasons - over active thyroid, low calcium, and low magnesium.  Your GP can test thyroid and calcium.  Most of us are magnesium deficient so you could supplement magnesium citrate and soak in Epsom salts baths to replace magnesium.

Welcome to our forum Jayne8 and congratulations of having a little baby 3 months ago but, of course, if you are having weird symptoms it will take some of the joy out of it a bit.

It is not unusual for new mothers to become hypothyroid and I shall give you a couple of links which gives a better explanation.

First, if you haven't had a blood test for your thyroid hormones make the earliest possible and don't eat befor it. You can drink water though. Ask for a full thyroid function test which is TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. Also ask for a Vitamin b12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as we can also be deficient.

Some people can become hypo thyroid and some hyper thyroid (hypo = low : hyper - high).

Thank you, I will do my symptoms sound like thyroid issues? Especially the twitching it's the one thing that's upsetting me most

It's a bit scary when you have strange/weird symptoms. It's not as if it a headache or something we've had before. These are symptoms of hypo:

and hyper:-

Hmmm twitching isn't on there, but I've seen a few people say they have them.

This is similar:

Shakiness/trembling

Nervousness, anxiety, excitability

 Insomnia/racing thoughts

 Talkativeness

You're asking for a blood test - the details of which are listed in Shaws' original comment in the paragraph starting 'First'

Hi. I started to feel really unwell after having my second child. Exhausted. Muscle aches. Etc. Twitches. Lost weight really quick. 2 years later I was diagnosed with having had sheehans syndrome. Hypopiturism and hyppadrenalism. I'd go and ask for a full hormone work up

This happened to

Me ! I lost so much weight. From 7 stone to 6 stones 2 weeks after birth. I tested positive for thyroid antibodies. My pregnancy triggered this . Maybe get tested for this ? That's thyroid antibodies different to overall thyroid level . This is called hashimotid docs here in my opinion don't know too much about this but maybe get tested for antibodies . I have some info on my blog rainbowbabyhopes.wordpress.com and best to get your thyroid checked too. I didn't have your symptoms though .
