Just a quick question, now I am taking 10 tablets a day of the Betaine, I would have expected to have an acidy stomach but this is not the case, how many more tablets is it safe to have, or can I boost it in other ways.
Thank you

I don't think you experience an 'acid stomach'. It just means you provide 'acid' through Betaine to dissolve proteins.
My Betaine/pepsin instructions say to take no more than three per day. Most times I only need 1 and I have no pain/discomfort after I eat. Whereas before I had a lot of discomfort and doctor prescribe antacid - which was wrong as I had even more pain.
Does that mean you take them for life? The book I am reading said that I should take as many as required to cause an acidy stomach, which will then switch my own supply back on, i guess after that swedish bitters would come into play, but ten tablets seem a lot.
If we are hypo we usually have low stomach acid rather than high. We might not be aware but as I said above when we tell GP symptoms they prescribe antacids which aren't helpful if we are low acid.
I don't experience any problems now as I am providing acid (Betaine/pepsin) at least once daily.
Many do the method with Apple Cider Vinegar and that's an alternative way. Some don't like the taste of ACV so mix it with juice instead of water as mentioned by SeasideSuesie the best is with 'mother'.
I take mine just before and it does say to take it with food. I don't think it matters if before or during. I think getting into a routine so that it becomes automatic and you don't have to 'remember'. If you run out Apple Cider Vinegar can be used instead (mixed with water or juice)
I've taken mine during a meal. But you can take it before or after, I assume. Always dilute it.
This is from STTM:
Swallowing daily supplements with healthy acids added to water or your favorite juice, such as one tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) or lemon juice, has helped many. Preferable brands of ACV are unfiltered, unheated, and unpasteurized (Braggs is one, but there are others). You can also disguise the ACV in water with flavored stevia, or Vitamin C packets, or more.
Do NOT drink ACV by itself–it can burn your esophagus. (I have highlighted this part).
I got up to a similar amount but found it didn't make any difference. I couldn't deal with taking that many nor the amount of water needed to swallow them all at meal times.
I changed to using organic apple cider vinegar with Mother, I take 1 tablespoonful in a cupful of warm water (with honey or molasses so it doesn't taste too acidic) before breakfast and again before evening meal. That has worked well for me.
This website scdlifestyle.com/2012/03/ho... does advocate taking as many as needed, but I've seen that some people have said there is a limit given on the packs they have purchased. It's confusing.
Thank you SeasideSusie, I think I will try apple cider vinegar. I know I have low stomach acid, I get terrible stomach if I don't take these tablets but ten a day seems so much, on top of all my other supplements - my poor liver.
Thank you for the Tip with the Apple Cider Vinegar and the link - I certainly have leaky gut - must start focusing on those too things now : >
Kitten-whiskers This is the one I use boots.com/en/Biona-Organic-... (I don't buy it from there, just the first link I found). Comes in a glass bottle (no nasties that might be in plastic), is organic, unfiltered, unpasteurised, pressed, not heat treated and contains the Mother. The bits floating around are important so don't think there's anything wrong with it. If you add honey it's quite a pleasant drink. I use molasses because it's a source of iron (not much but I need all the help I can get!) Put the honey (or molasses) in the cup first, add warm water and stir to melt it. When cooled a bit add the cider vinegar.
I was taking 6 Betaine with each meal (so 18 per day) - and was still waiting for "the burn", and that went on for a few months. My nutritionist had checked if it was OK to take so many, and was assured that it was fine. I suffer from bad absorption problems, and had tested deficient in many nutrients.
I've never yet had anything that felt like a burning sensation, but my stomach did start feeling a teeny bit uncomfortable (not acidy or painful), so I cut it down to 5 per meal, got the odd feeling again, cut it down to 4 etc. I am now taking one 1 per meal (so 3 per day).
I thought 10 was a lot, but 18 wow. What an improvement, down to three a day - well done.
I have been on 10 for a few days and my torso feels very sore, no sure if its a burning sensation or just another Hypo symptom. I have not had any today.... see how I get on, I guess I should cut them back and start on the swedish bitters with the ACV.
I very definitely have never had any kind of burning sensation, which is what I thought I would get. I think I read that it might also be like a vague indigestion-type feeling. I wasn't sure if my "feeling" was caused by the Betaine - it must have been, as it went away as I reduced my dose.
