How long does it take for thyroxine to lower tsh?
Molliemoo1, if dose is sufficient it can start lowering TSH in a couple of weeks. 100mcg T4 + 25mcg T3 lowered my TSH 107.5 to 0.16 in 6 weeks.
I think levothyroxine will lower TSH very quickly, but since it has a 7 day half life it builds up over time. After about a week you will have about half the final dose in your bloodstream. So after about a week you should see about half the effect on the TSH (if my logic is correct!).
lowering TSH, is not your goal with thyroid medication..i hope you know about proper testing and treatment. A doctor who doses meds, by TSH..is pretty bad and will leave you ill.
When I was diagnosed at over 100, it took 6 weeks to go down to 59 then another 6 to reach 20 then 6 again to go to under 3. So it does take a while. BUT everyone is different.

Everybody is different, and there are a lot of variables. Some people absorb Thyroxine better than others, some can utilise it better than others (low Vitamins can cause a problem here). Some people find that when they are first prescribed thyroxine their own thyroid, which has been struggling but still produces something, takes the opportunity for a well-earned break and stops producing anything at all, so the Thyroxine doesn't seem to make much difference until the dose is raised. I'm sure there is not a direct linear relationship between thyroxine dose and TSH, and definitely not between TSH and severity of symptoms. Many people find they still have uncomfortable symptoms until their TSH drops below 1.
