Thyroid and fire retardants/air fresheners/scents

Anyone else just heard the woman on Jeremy Vine saying she has discovered her thyroid problems are related to the environment, she cited fire retardants as the cause.

Any thoughts?

I've read about people who react to air fresheners. Chuck it out and see if you feel better.

I don't have any, I have ME so have no make-up, hair-spray or scented cleaning products but thought it might be of interest to others.

I'm the same as you. No scented things in my house. I'm no good with washing powders with strong scents either. I avoid smellies of all kinds including car air freshener in friends cars, they know me now and are brilliant at removing it. I don't think you can avoid fire retardants though? 'M'

How do you tactfully mention air fresheners in friends cars? Do you have a way of mentioning perfume too?

The woman on the programme said she had a mattress made of sheep's wool and horsehair because sheep's wool is not a fire hazard. Not sure about sofa etc though, but I'll bear it in mind next time I'm furnishing.

I suffer with serious allergies and start to wheeze so they're very understanding. I have always politely explained about my allergies before getting in a car and not one person has refused to remove/turn off the air freshener. I couldn't afford bespoke furniture so that side of it I can't avoid.

I have chemical allergies which make my life difficult especially socialising, even getting on the bus can be traumatic as many women douse themselves in perfume which creates pains in the side of my head and wheezing. I joined a group at my library and had to leave due to perfume use, the leader of the group was trying to be helpful and mentioned to members my allergy, this caused uproar with one woman in particular being furious at the thought of leaving her perfume off and verbally attacking me, of course I never went back. I do have people around me who try to be more thoughtful which I am grateful for but they are in the minority. I read that some Companies in the USA have banned perfume in the workplace, wish the condition was recognised more here.

Gone are the days of natural product use for cleaning or otherwise, we are inundated with synthetic smells which are toxic, more money into the coffers of huge conglomerates never mind the health of the nation.
