Hi
Could anyone please advise me what the hypothyroid test range is classed as normal? TIA
Sos1965, there isn't a universal 'normal'. Ranges vary across the country. Your results need interpretation according to the ranges used by the lab which analyses your thyroid bloods.
Thanks for your reply. My range is back at 5.6 my doctor says its fine but I still feel tired and have brain fog and forget everything, is this normal?
Probably not, you still sound like you're hypo but until you get your reference range, we don't have the full necessary picture.
For example:-
TSH (H) 18.62 (0.27 - 4.20 IU/L)
^ The range is in brackets and as you can see, one of my blood tests confirms a high TSH by the reference range in brackets and being symptomatic. Now this range may not be the same as the one used by the lab your GPs use. They vary.
*Always* get a print out of your results and *never* take your GP's word for it that your "fine"...

Thank you, I am still new at this, I will get a reading.
Believe me, you'll be up to speed in no time! It's a very quick learning curve when you're unwell, being under treated but still being told you're fine, we've all been there :0)
Welcome to the board.

Did you have the earliest possible blood test and fast? If you were on thyroid hormones you'd leave about 24 hours between the last dose and the test and take it afterwards. Having the earliest test keeps the TSH at its highest as it lowers throughout the day.
It's a new revelation when you remain undiagnosed but have lots of symptoms.

Some doctors will prescribe if it's slightly above the range and some will wait till it's 10!
No i didnt fast or left my meds for 24 hours, I wasn't told too.
I will re visit my doc and have a re-test.
Thanks for your reply.
You can drink water when you fast. The recommendation is only recent and I doubt doctors are aware of the best time for thyroid testing .
I have looked at a couple of your back posts and see you've already been diagnosed as hypo so your TSH of 5+ is high if you are on thyroid hormones. It's obvious your doctor is unaware that the aim should be towards the lower part of the range, i.e. around 1 or lower when we're diagnosed - not somewhere in range.
Sos1965, if you mean your TSH is 5.6, it is high and indicates your thyroid is failing. NHS will usually diagnose hypothyroidism when TSH is over range but some GPs wait until patients are overtly hypothyroid with TSH >10.
Ask your GP receptionist for your thyroid results and the range and post them in a new question for advice.
