Fna detected Suspicious hurthle cells

Hi i an a 37 ye old with hypothyroidism. I recently had a fna on a 1.5 x 1.3 nodule which has been same size for 2 years. The resukts can back with suspicious hurthle cells. The dr said he cant say whether they are benign or malignant. I an so scared as have 2 young children and all the searches i do say these cells are cancer. The endo said i can have a repeat fna but probably come back with same result ir to remove thyroid completely. I cant eat ir sleep at the moment worrying about what to do. Also my antibidies were high so dr said could be hashimoto also. Any advice or support would be appreciated

Hurthle cells aren't always cancer. However, as your doctor has said the cells appear to be suspicious you can either request the slides are reviewed by another pathologist or have a repeat FNA in 3 months. If the suspicious cells are confined to one side of the thyroid gland you could have a hemilobectomy to remove that side of the thyroid gland but it's likely you will have to return for completion thyroidectomy if cancer is confirmed by histopathology.

I had thy3 on a nodule, ie inconclusive. FNA wasn't repeated as the nodule was scheduled for removal as it was compressing my trachea. Histopathology after hemilobectomy showed it was Hurthle cell cancer. I had completion thyroidectomy 3 months later. The cancer hadn't spread to the other thyroid lobe and I've been in remission 4 years now. It was a bonus that Hashimoto's symptoms resolved after completion thyroidectomy.

I m sorry to hear you have such worry. I was alarmed too due to a T3 result of my large over 2cms thyroid nodule and was told to have half of my thyroid removed. ASAP. It came back as benign hurtle cell adenoma. The docs thought it would be cancer. The op. wasn't too bad although I decided to give up working strenuous night shifts shortly afterwards.( Not strong enough now) I read that hashimotos disease produces hurtle cells and regret not asking enough questions. It's strange how they want to remove all of your thyroid gland as the standard procedure is to remove only half. I think. Hope you get good news soon as I did nearly two years ago.
