Katlees, a lot of thyroid patients find they become intolerant to alcohol. I'm glad to say I'm not one of them although I rarely drink alcohol these days.

I don't drink. I wouldn't have the energy to recover from it ATM. However I have read that alcohol does aggravate the thyroid but that's all I could tell you right now sorry

I used to like a cigarette now and then but can't do that either. Just makes me feel so ill and wipes me out. But that is a good thing I know though I do miss it :(

My daughter can't tolerate it, a small amount gives her a 4 day hangover :-(

Same here three glasses I get black outs and two days to recover. But I still drink sometimes

Since reaching the age of 45ish, white wine gives me terrible sinusitis and hangovers. Red is fine with dinner, though half the time I just don't like how alcohol feels now and I rarely drink wine without food. I do like beer and I often enjoy half a bottle of ale and put the rest in the fridge for another day, thus avoiding being in the loo repeatedly throughout the night and feeling dehydrated in the morning.

When I think of what I used to put away in my 30s...

I love a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc but it makes my ears hiss the next day.

A bit like having tinnitus on top of (pre-existing) tinnitus ... so weird !

I'm ok with wine (akthough I never have more than one large glass as I can't do hangovers anymore ;-) ) but can't tolerate beer any more and I used to love real ales :-(

I get something like allergic rhinitis when I drink any alcohol, which has got much worse in recent years (in my 50s). Even one glass can produce these symptoms. I'm worse with white wine, which contains more sulphites. I think this is related to histamine intolerance from what I have read. I still persevere with antihistamines but they are less and less effective! So on a histamine elimination diet now for 6 weeks and then will see by gradually introducing foods and drinks which contain histamines....

Could you kindly tell me where you found details of histamine elimination diet? -thanks

I would recommend reading "what HIT me?" by Genny Masterman. It's really informative. Also check out the website of the Low Histamine Chef; lowhistaminechef.com. You'll get loads of information there, with links to new research. The owner of the website, Yasmina Ykelenstam has also written recipe books which include lots of low histamine recipes with advice on nutrients to eliminate histamine from the body and build immunity. Another good website is: histamineintoleranz.ch. This site is in German but you get English translations too. I downloaded a list of foods from there listing their histamine levels and histamine releasing potentials. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for an informative reply. Lots of help on offer. The first link doesn't seem to be available any more but plenty on the other and I will check the book. Have a good day!

Strange that the first link doesn't work. I tried and it didn't work for me either. But when I did a search for low histamine chef, it came up. Maybe you could try just typing in the below in your web browser or doing a search for "low histamine chef".

lowhistaminechef.com/

It's definitely still active. There is also a facebook page which you can like and follow.

I'm definitely not able to drink much wine now, because of the after effects. I do allow myself one glass occasionally, but know I will feel bad afterwards.

I too have problems with alcohol. l used to be able to drink white wine occasionally but have found that even that is hard to tolerate anymore.

So glad its not just me! I havent got a thyroid gland since I was aged 10, but drinking alcohol on the social scene was never a problem for 43 years, but since my low cortisol was diagnosed alcohol is definitely an intolerance issue. I have shandies largely, or ginger beer, if I go out and sometimes I'm ok the next day, on other occasions I feel like I've had 20 pints and the rest, on the following day. I find that folk don't really understand where youre coming from when you say alcohol dosent suit.

I have never tolerated alcohol very well, particularly wine. Last time I drank 2.5 large glasses of red (on an empty stomach too), I was praying for death to claim me 6 hours later. Ended up being ill for three days. Never again!

I now avoid alcohol. :)
