Too low a dose of levothyroxine can also make us feel worse. Increasing the dose will help, I'm sure, as our bodies are desperate for thyroid hormones. We need sufficient to saturate our cells so that everything works as it should do, i.e. normal temp and heart beats etc.

It will take about 6 weeks to feel the benefit.

I understand how awful you feel particularly if you feel worse after taking levo for the first time. It can improve and we have to persevere. Eventually if still not improving you can try a change of thyroid hormones.

Your antibiotics also may have made you feel not too good.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank u so much shAws . I'm scared because I also felt nervous at one stage wen I was in 100 and I am just getting over a bad bout of flu and infection . If increasing to 75 as doc suggested will lift my mood in even a small way I will try and get leveld rechecked in a few weeks . Clutter also said I was low in ferritin . Cud this also be causing the nervous anxious low mood . I have ferrous fumerate here and cud try that as I cannot get doc until next week and I think that is too long a wait . I am trying so hard to get on top of this but need a lot of help and support each day . If I felt physically ok I cud handle the mental side . Also there was a suggestion of trying gluten free diet wud this have a positive effect . I am willing to do what it takes please advise xx

When I was, finally, diagnosed as hypo (by a first aider - never suggested by doctors/specialists/S&E) I was so pleased - first to have a 'name' and to take something that would make me feel better. The GP gave me too low a starting dose so there was practically no change in how I felt - still extremely ill.

Thankfully for the internet - what would we do without it - it led me to Thyroiduk.org.uk and I then began to learn that due to the modern method of diagnosing/treating that we appear to be worse off than when doctors knew all clinical symptoms (no blood tests then) and prescribed NDT on a trial basis until patient felt much better.

Many people feel fine when on an optimum dose of levothyroxine not when its judged that the person has sufficient when they still feel quite unwell. It's when the dose is gradually increased taking account of how the patient feels that improvements begin. Unfortunately some people don't improve much and the addition of some T3 can help and it is trial and error unfortunately.

It is essential that the hormones that we aren't producing enough of are replaced. The brain contains the most T3 receptors and every single cell in our body needs it. Ferritin etc helps to convert T4 to T3. Also taking Vitamin C with levo also helps too. Doctors don't appear to understand the sensations we can have when hypo.

When newly diagnosed we can have horrible sensations we've never had before and that alone makes us nervous as we're not in control but when you realise that it's the lack of hormones that's causing it you are on the way to recovery. This is a helpful link which was posted previously. When you feel anxiety rising, just assure yourself it's a normal phase and relax, breath more deeply and slowly(not so much that you are dizzy) and its another step forward.
