Am assuming your measurement was in nmol/L - so divide 56 by 2.5 = 22 - so I would suggest at least 5000 IU's of VitD daily. Also take VitK2 as D3 improves the uptake of calcium in the gut from foods - so the K2 directs it from the bloodstream to the bones.
Also D3 is fat soluble so take with a main meal or with some good fat.

I've been taking 10,000, (along with vit K2), having started with a blood level of 72. Taking it most days, I've managed to get to 138 in about 6 months.
It is vital to keep track of your level so that you don't take too much and get toxic.
If you take thyroxine, it is important to leave several hours before taking the D3 as it could otherwise interfere with absorption. Also, don't take it too late in the day, or it can keep you awake at night.
I take mine at lunch time.
