Hi I'm doing the wahls diet in the hope it will help my m.e, however you have to eat lots of liver and kidneys and I've had a hysterectomy and am concerned that my iron level could be too high. Do high iron levels have a negative effect on hashimotos, and if so what? I'm on t3 85 mcg and 1/4 grain of NDT.

Iron and hypothyroid
low iron levels certainly do. I wouldn,t worry unless u know yr ferritin levels are already high. The body has mechanisms to lower the absorption of iron .... unless you have a diagnosed iron disorder.
Just enjoy.
Thanks, when I took a multi vit with iron my ferritin went high, can't remember off top of my head, hoped that blood tests lowered it and I started using iron free. I guess I'd have to get GP to check , yawn yawn, that will be fun. What are the effects of too much ferritin , what should I look out for?
Can u dig out yr last test? It,s unlikely yr high if u aren't taking supps, but as u say once periods stop levels can go up a bit.
Yep, I'll do it when I'm next up from a rest, about 20 mins from now. Thanks much appreciate
I don't have ranges but my iron was 18 umol/ L and my ferritin was 163ugl/L
"Adults with normal intestinal function have very little risk of iron overload from dietary sources of iron [2]. However, acute intakes of more than 20 mg/kg iron from supplements or medicines can lead to gastric upset, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and faintness, especially if food is not taken at the same time." This is from the US Nat. Instits Health site.
You're not taking supps, obviously, and i think if I were you I'd be avoiding foods with artificially added iron, like cornflakes and some flours/breads - I expect they're not allowed on the diet anyway. I understand your concern, 160 is quite high, though not too scarily so. Hmm. You could donate some blood to bring it down, (or make friends with your local vampire.)
OK, this is the site to read, I think. I deduce from it that it would be good to make sure you are taking in lots of antioxidants. And not to have the red wine with the liver, that's sad....!

Thanks for your query, I learned a lot trying to find an accurate reply!
The Iron Overload Insitit above give 200ng/nl as the upper limit for serum ferritin, though they'd prefer to see an optimal upper limit of 75.
Thanks for all that, yes no wine or bread, its virtually ketogenic, 9 cups of a broad range of low carb veg and some protein, fats. Unfortunately having m.e I am not allowed to give blood.
