Doctors think that all that is necessary for healthy bones is calcium. Once again, doctors are wrong!

My Pilates teacher who is also a physiotherapist says 'forget the calcium ladies ( no men in our class) what you need for strong bones is vitamin D3 and K' - plus exercises to strengthen you up so that you won't fall over. I'm sure I've read that too much calcium can be bad for your heart.

Calcium from suppléments tends to collect in the tissues rather than in the bones - that's what the K2 is for but people rarely know about that - and can cause heart attacks. Also kidney stones!

Bravo to your Pilates teacher!

It will be interesting to see his follow up article. Based on past history it could be on the site within a week or so. I'd be interested in the effects of minerals and vitamins I have never supplemented, however I'd be surprised if the article covers unusual things like strontium, for example.

I was always taught that bones are made of many minerals, calcium being only one of them!! A true story, my aunt (in her 80s) was told to take a once a week calcium tablet, she was not told the side effects and ended up not being able to swallow anything because her throat was so inflamed thanks to taking a calcium supplement prescribed by a doctor.

Doesn't surprise me at all. They know nothing about it. It's a kness jerk reaction : old ladies? bones? Calcium!!! Pft I hope your aunt recovered.

And the public doesn't know either, because of all those yohurt adds : you need calcium for strong bones! Oh, look! We've added so vit D3 to help you absorb it! Aren't we wonderful!!! Makes me so cross. lol
