Not feeling to good.

Hi all!

My doctor put me on Vitamin D3 500mcg. Two to be taken for the first 3 weeks. Then one to be taken after that. Before getting D3 I've been getting a dry mouth. Sneezing but haven't come out with a cold. And now coughing like mad again. Ive been trying to get to sleep but finding it hard to full asleep. When I do. I wake up really hot as if I've got a tempter. Full of head ache and have an upset stomach to go with it. Back pain and stomach as well. And still feel like this after starting on the D3. And I'm still like this. I take 175mg Levothyroxine. And I saw my surgert team and she said it was all ok. But I still feel real sick. Is their anyone who can advise please. Thanks

Hi Haze, Usually D3 comes in international units, I.U. What form are you taking? I tried different variations of D3; sprays, drops, gels and decided they do not agree with me. You may be one of those as well. It does raise calcium and that is why it is often combined with K2 which disperses calcium to the right areas. It is also more of a hormone than a vitamin which leads me to believe there is a lot more to learn about D.

Can you double check the amount you are being asked to take, please.

500mcg is equivalent to 20,000 IU, so you are being asked to take 40,000 IU per day for three weeks. This is not impossible but it is slightly unusual. You must have been desperately deficient to have been prescribed so much. (I do hope I've done my conversion correctly!)

If you are struggling to take the high dose you've been prescribed there is nothing wrong with lowering the dose yourself, and just accepting that it will take longer to raise your level.

Some people raise their levels quite well on 10,000 IU or 5000 IU per day, but if you are starting from a very deficient level it could take a few months to get to a healthy level. Vitamin D can be bought online and doesn't cost a huge amount. I'd say it is one of the more affordable supplements.

How about this one?

amazon.co.uk/Vitamin-Nu-Sof...

I just picked the first popular one I found on Amazon with a 10,000 IU dosage, but obviously you would need to do your research. I have never used the one I just linked, I was just giving an example, I'm not making a recommendation.

If you sneeze a lot and you cough, I can think of two possible causes - there are probably lots more.

1) You are allergic to something in your levothyroxine tablets. Try taking an anti-histamine an hour before taking your levo. If it reduces the coughing and sneezing it suggests you would be best trying a different brand. You will either need to ask your doctor to specify the brand you want to try, or phone around various pharmacies when you have a prescription and ask what brands they have available. Don't just go to a pharmacy and hope for the best.

2) Have you ever had your Free T3 levels tested? You might be unable to convert T4 to T3 very well. Low T3 is responsible for many? most? hypothyroid symptoms, and coughing is definitely one of them. With one known deficiency (the vitamin D) and possibly others too, conversion will be compromised. Do you know how good your iron, ferritin, B12, and folate levels are? If your Free T3 levels are low you would be better taking some T3 with your T4 (levo). But trying to get T3 out of the NHS these days is like getting blood out of a stone. You could always treat yourself. T3 and NDT can be bought online. If this appeals to you, ask about it in a separate question.

Check out this site: parathyroid.com Insist your doctors check you calcium levels.

When we're sick & the doctors say "all OK," it's shorthand for them not knowing or caring whats wrong. They're not paid to do anything but hand out as many prescriptions as they can.

Thank you for helping.xx

Heloise they are hux D3 20,000 unit capsules.

And humanbean the label said 2 to be taken for the first 3 weeks then one to be taken weekly for nine weeks to complete the course. Blood test to repeat vitamin day(s) level after all tablets are gone please. I only taken them once a week. Not on a daily base. And I've been on levothyroxine since 2013. It was my asmer nurse told me to try a anti histamine because I had a lot problem with this. About a year ago. I've stop taken them. Because I thought I didn't need them. And hay fever season had gone. And I don't like taken tablets unless I have too. And my d12 level drop to 20 below the minimum range. My blood test was on my last post.

Thanks haze.

I really don't know about all those symptoms. I don't think Levo is a good treatment but obviously some people do okay with it. I don't know if this applies to you but it is something to think about with D supplementation.

Hi - I take vitamin D3 daily - 10,000 ius of it. I've successfully raised my levels from very low to about mid-range at the moment. I take it with its co-factors - vitamin K2 mk7 and magnesium (which I take at night - time and helps me sleep)

The d3 is great for lots of things - I found that bone pain, aches went away and also I tend not to get colds and flus anymore. I'm in a group online on Vitamin D and they recommend taking a daily dose over the weekly dose which doctors can give us. Also that the stuff doctors prescribe can have nasty fillers. I successfully raised my levels using a Vitamin D spray I found in Holland and Barrett - I think it was 4000 ius daily - and I'm up at 10,000 just now as its winter. I take it in the form of a gelcap in an oil-based formula and I have absolutely no issues with it.

Perhaps changing the method of taking it will help you? Also this website is very good for information about vitamin D vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

Hope it helps x

Haze it is not unusual with vitamin D depletion to be prescribed 60000IU/week and for 4-6 weeks. A very hefty dose.

Vitamin D is fat soluble so perhaps better to split the daily dose into two and have each with your meals.

I couldn't tolerate any vitamin D before I have upped my magnesium levels a bit. So, if you are not taking any magnesium perhaps it is worthy considering adding it to your daily supplements and see how it goes.

I hope you'll find some relief very soon.

500 mcg or even 1000 mcg isnt a high dose at all. Some people raising their D3 levels take much more safely. Good though if it is taken with some Vit K2 in particular, and some selenium.

Have you ever been diagnosed with SAD? Its very easy to get and this time of year when the days are darker and shorter it can hit people badly. You can get a lamp that you sit in front of and it's supposed to be like sunlight without burning you.

As for the vitamin D dosage, I was also told that you can't overdose on vitamin D as the body just stores it in your fat. I initially had to take 2000 dosage twice a day when I started. I take Vitamin D on it's own without the calcium part as I get constipated with other meds and the calcium would contribute to it. If you pay for your meds you can get them for around 99p for 100 x 1000units at good chemists in their vitamin range in the small white plastic tubs.

When I started taking vitamin D my level was 22 and my GP said it should have been between 55-75. I felt sickly at first then it seemed to get better.

I have had to have the dose increased over time as my body gets used to it because I'm indoors 95% of the time due to health and mobility I rarely get vitamin D from the sun. I was asked to sit in the sun for 20 mins every day without sun cream to get the levels up. I have found when I have managed this I do feel a lot better and am less tired.

I'm currently on 2 x 800 unit a day. (After the initial blast of higher dosage my bloods were done again and it had risen so the dosage was lowered to keep it at that level).

Hello Haze,

My endo upped my D3 from 1000 units to 5000 units and I became dehydrated, constipated, anxious and spaced out..... NOT for me.... I am presently waiting for it to deplete out of my system ..... I'll stick to 1000 units..... Everyone's bodies react differently.... Take good care😊
