It's hard for me to tell if I'm reacting to meds in the normal way since I can't judge by any improvement in symptoms. Stopped levothyroxine/Mylan after 7 months due to a variety of allergic reactions. Off meds for 3 weeks - the best I felt in 7 months. Started synthroid 11/30 and have experienced the following new things: pain in knee (r), vertigo, eye pain, eye twitching, eye goop, head pressure that ends up being a dull ache off and on, left arm feels odd and sometimes hurts when trying to lift something. Some rashes, hives and itching. These are different than the reactions I had on the levothyroxine. Are people supposed to react to the meds in this manner? Is this just the body adjusting to the Thyroxine?

Hi phirestar, it's difficult to say because your thyroid is in every cell of your body which means it can have a variety of effects. Are you at an optimum level? I think everyone might have any of those symptoms from time to time but if they are noticeable on a daily basis, perhaps it's not normal. There are fillers that may be the actual cause. Have you seen the ingredient lists?
Do you know your blood test results?
Personally I have never had rashes or hives and I have been on Synthroid, Armour and Erfa at times.
If you felt better off the meds, you might be better off on a lower dose? You don't mention what dosage of synthroid, or how you know you're hypothyroid in the first place?
If you're feeling good with nothing, I'd be tempted to wait and see how long it lasts before you start feeling crappy, take your temperature, pulse, and whatever else you can get regularly to build up a picture. The halflife of T4 is 6 days. Altho I think it can slow to 10 if you're very hypo. So in 3 weeks you had cleared out at least 3 quarters of the meds you were on, and maybe even 7 eighths.
Phirestar, if the rashes, hives and itching began when you started Synthroid it's likely to be an allergic reaction to one of the fillers. Take an antihistamine an hour before you take Synthroid, if they're relieved it confirms an allergy.
You will have no useful amount of hormone in your system after being off Levothyroxine for 3 weeks so the other symptoms may be due to being hypo and should resolve when you are optimally medicated.

Thank you all for the info. It's most helpful. I searched the www for a site that provides info and insight into this disease and I liked this one the best - even if I'm across the pond!
Welcome to Medicare on 3/15 TSH 12.4 - here an auto medication if over 10. 6/15 TSH 6.4 ft4 1.1,
8/7 TSH 3.01 11/25 TSH 21, ft4 .7, TPO >1000. August was when I got back to bacK bladder infections, the first one about the time of the blood work up. The first bladder infection I ever had. Sick till mid September. During that time, was constipated ( a first for the length of time that it lasted) and was making myself eat. The bladder infections presented 2 different ways. Also started with more weird eye stuff. The hives etc started in August but I initially chalked that up to the antiobotics. Till I went off the Levo 11/6? they got progressively worse. Within several days of stopping Levo/ mylan the hives etc stopped, the faucet nose stopped and I felt like my normal self. Started in April with 25 mcg, June increased to 50mcg. Dr happy with 3.01 as lab high is 5.0. I'm aware of the new high of 3.0. Started 50mcg of synthroid 11/30. Didn't have the itchy/ hive thing again till starting the synthroid. So far it's NOWHERE near as bad as when on the Levo/mylan. Synthroid seems to be effecting me in a different way. The more bothersome is the dull headache and head pressure. I don't/ never had hypo symptoms but I seem to get these reactions on the medications. I'm aware that some of these reactions are symptoms or can be linked to the thyroid problem. What is difficult is I didnt have any of these before starting meds or when I stopped taking the Levo/mylan for 3 weeks. The head stuff feels like when I reacted to cottonwood trees which would last about 2 weeks when they did their thing in the spring. Had one in the yard and took Benadryl while they did their thing. No cottonwoods in CA.
Fired the first dr when he refused to test TPO and told me there is no test for hashi. Dr# 2 agreed to test TPO but refused to test ft3. Wanted to try tironsint which I was willing to pay for for a 30-90 day period -whatever I could get- just to rule out some issues but was denied. Even with the TSH of 21 - I felt great and was surprised it was that high. No other meds, no other health conditions, no food sensitivities, no other known significant allergies - just the allergic reaction to the Levo/ mylan. That's my only known allergy with any significant impact.
Almost all the above symptoms I experience though now know it's time to try the levothyroxine! Thanks for sharing. Maple leaf
