I think it is the other way around - the thyroid dysfunction causes the ovarian cysts.

Do a google search for "thyroid ovarian cysts" or "hypothyroidism ovarian cysts".

Hi

I have had Graves and Thyrotoxicosis, and I also had severe menstrual problems prior to the onset (or more accurately the diagnosis) of Graves which continued through my treatment and on levothyroxine. I don't have PCOS (ie I don't have cysts) but have had ongoing gynae investigations and was told I had 'the syndrome but not the cysts' - it all seems to have settled down now my thyroid levels are stable, I'm on NDT and the raging autoimmunity has calmed down. However, from googling the two conditions are linked. I'm not sure you could say the ovarian cysts caused the Graves, maybe more that the endocrine disruption affects all of your hormones, and active Graves disease certainly causes female sex hormone derangement.

Another thing to possibly research is iodine and how this might be linked - main iodine uptake sites in a woman's body are thyroid, breast, gut and ovaries. I know many women who have thyroid issues, also have sex hormone issues, and issues with fibrous breast tissue, fibroids etc, which is linked to iodine. I also know of many cases of sex hormone and reproductive issues following treatment for Graves with Radioactive Iodine.

Please note that I am not recommending you supplement with iodine if you have active Graves disease - iodine is a hotly debated topic in thyroid circles with much discussion pro and con, with some asserting its the cure of all ills, and others screaming it's the problem. There is a great deal of conflicting information out there and you'd need to be extremely careful to get good advice.

Hope that helps,

GS

For anyone having difficulty understanding posts because they contain abbreviations or acronyms they don't know, you might care to download my personal list of such things:

I do quite frequently update it - whenever I notice something that isn't in there. So even if you already have a copy, you might care to download it again in order to get the latest version.

Natural Dessicated Thyroid - it's bioidentical thyroid hormone replacement, unlike levothyroxine which is synthetic. I take this now as my thyroid was removed as I had such severe Graves and hashitoxicosis and thyroid cancer, that i had no other choice.

At the moment I am awaiting to go into hospital to have an ovarian cyst removed, but I had Thyrotoxicosis/Graves 37 years ago and have had various breast cysts and one on Liver since then. The one on my Liver has dispersed and various breast ones were aspirated or dispersed naturally. These problems seem to go with having Thyroid problems. If no-one has any objection, I will be showing the doctor/s a copy of this post.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I struggled to fall pregnant with my second child, ending up having to take the fertility drug. I was diagnosed with Graves about 5 years ago but think I has been borderline for years.
