If my doctor denies I have thyroid problems but I KNOW I do and my body can tell me it does, would it be safe to get on some kind of thyroid medicine without knowing if it's hyper hypo or goes back and forth. I have suffered from this for years and I'm desperate to get on medicine I'm just afraid to make it worse.
Thank you.

Wifemomteacher, it's critical to know whether you have hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism before you self medicate. Taking the wrong thyroid or anti-thyroid medication will definitely make things a lot worse and may be dangerous.
I asked you to post your thyroid results and ranges on your previous thread. If you can do this members will be able to advise you.
Make sure the ranges are also stated. For your information this is a doctor who prescribed for many of us before his death. He and Dr Peatfield were trained around the same time and it was all about clinical symptoms (no blood tests were invented then) and Dr P gave up his licence when he was asked to appear before the GMC for prescribing NDT (he'd always done so). Dr S appeared 7 times before them and died of a stroke about two years ago shortly after his 7th appearance. He was so worried about the state of patients remaining undiagnosed when they were clearly hypo that he wrote to every Endocrinologist and invited them to a conference to discuss the Parlous situation of patients in this day and age. None of them agreed to discuss and the very last Endo withdrew the day before.
I think Big Pharma in the USA did a huge push initially when both blood tests and levothyroxine were introduced and eventually pushed NDT off the list. Doctors getting a nice 'commission' I should think.
If you are sure you need help for thyroid and your doctor doesnt agree why not try the natural thyroid pills? You get these privately, your doctor does not need to know?
Hi wifemomteacher, I was the same as you, my GP actually refused to test my T4 and T3 and laughed in my face about my symptoms - I self treat and have never been so happy and healthy - I am on T3 only and took a very slow methodical approach to introducing it and have never had one scary episode or gone hyper - so my advice would be, do your research, make sure all your vitamin and mineral levels are optimal, get a private thyroid test to confirm your suspicions and if they show a problem, decide on how you'd like to treat yourself and take it slowly - good luck X
