Has there ever been information gathered about the possible causes for thyroid illnesses?

There is info about what can give people cancer and diabetes etc. But I have never seen anything that can cause thyroid illness. So does anyone know of any?

Can be hereditary, certainly in my case.

Whilst Big Pharma continue to peddle their wares and GPs enjoy financial reward, where is the incentive to change the status quo?

Yes and that is the problem that if no one knows what causes it then you cannot take steps to avoid it happening. Very frustrating.

Win, Autoimmune disease causes most thyroid dysfunction, around 50% of hyperthyroidism and 90% of hypothyroidism.

Puberty, pregnancy and menopause are hormonal triggers, and gluten may trigger autoimmune disease in the gut. Environmental toxins and stress are also assumed to play a part.

Some medications can trigger non-autoimmune hypothyroidism but some hypothyroidism is idiopathic ie no known cause.

I have always had thyroid issues with a growing goitre and last year hyperthyroid. I have also always had high levels of emotional stress from having narcissistic parents. As I have been trying to deal with all this it has become clear that the emotional stress/thyroid/autoimmune issues are all related. Heidi Sawyer on YouTube has some good talks about this. Stress certainly gets trapped in the body, especially childhood trauma. It also uses up nutritional resources at a faster rate.

No doubt there are other factors, but for me this has been key.

Also agree with gluten causing many problems and have found cutting it out helps a lot.

It is well known that abused children and wives (presumably husbands, too) can go on to develope thyroid disorders in later life. Chronic stress affects the adrenals and the thyroid badly.

Hashi's can be caused by excess endocrine disruptors, like iodine and soy. Fluoride in the water can destroy your thyroid, too. But it's unlikely that anything is going to be done about that, because there's too much money involved. If you take lithium for depression, that can also have an effect on the thyroid.

So many, many possible causes, difficult to avoid them all.

Thanks Clutter and yes I can see now how impossible it all is to avoid these many causes especially stress. So we must keep on researching and hoping to make our lives a little better.
