For the last 10 years or so i have had several issues with with my health but just recently i have been told i have CKD and been put on a registar . I just wondering whether others are experiencing such issues . Is there a connection between thyroid problems and CKD?

Do you have a recent full thyroid panel of results to share, kidneys often suffer when under-replaced

I haven't had blood tests done for a year as my doctors don't seem to want to do full thyroid bloods think its a cost cutting thing. The surgery did some blood tests about 3 weeks ago and the only outcome was to tell me i had CKD. I had a medication reduction about six months ago from 100mg to 75mg and have been struggling with symtoms .

Then you need FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing

75mcg is very low dose unless you’re very petite

What were results that caused dose reduction from 100mcg to 75mcg

Never agree to dose reduction based on just TSH

Exactly what vitamin supplements are you taking

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Tips on how to do DIY finger prick test

support.medichecks.com/hc/e...

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

You should have had thyroid levels retested 2-3 months after dose reduction

Did you …..please add results and ranges

Being on inadequate dose levothyroxine results in reduced kidney function

This is reversible with increasing dose of levothyroxine

No my doctors surgery are very lax they take nearly 10 days before meds are dispensed they say its due to pressure of patients. Thanks slow Dragon

Perhaps look at changing GP surgery

Come back with new post once you have got full thyroid and vitamin testing done

Most likely will need to test privately as you MUST test Ft3, Ft4 together plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

What vitamin supplements are you taking

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70:

FT3 is indirectly proportional to Kidney filtration. FT3 influences the RAAS system (controls cardiac output amongst other things, and hence changes the flow of blood through our vital systems). It can constrict the blood supply in the kidneys and hence Kidney output lowers.

This means that serum markers such as Creatinine are raised in the blood, which then defines a lower eGFR score and the conclusion that it's CKD.

However, in this particular instance, the kidney is not damaged (or at least not as damaged as it appears), and eGFR can increase again once FT3 increases and cardiac output is normal.

So yes, a proper Thyroid hormone test is vital.

Thank you for your information elaar

VLJones,

Once thyroid hormones are low and normal kidney function is impaired (as well explained by elaar), problems will heighten as are self driven by a further urinery loss of thyroid hormones attached to proteins and reduced FT4 - FT3 conversion that should be happening in healthy kidneys. Eventually blood glucose raises as does BP and adrenal issues set in.

I had all this for many year and reversed it by 'normalising' my inadequate T3 levels. Many members need to perform private thyroid hormone blood tests as GP’s won’t test FT3 which is the vital hormone.
