I know asking alot of questions today would just like to know what is working best for most people for their scaly skin on their body's. I have been trying that new aveeno lotion and body wash but doesn't last on me. I can't do baby oil have a phobia of anything greasy on my skin lol. Would be good to see what other people opinions are. X

Hi Razzar, switching to Armour and supplementing iodine have both made huge differences to my skin. I used to be able to brush my arm and see the scales falling off. I think this is a 'finding the right medication for you' matter rather than different creams and potions.

Regards, Katy

Hi Razzar, yes you can buy iodine online. I take tablets that are the same ratio of iodine and iodide as Lugol's solution. Iodine is controversial here and you might like to read up about it before jumping in. A good place to start is

I would be wary of using iodine supplements if you are hypothyroid. An excerpt:

If iodine deficiency isn't the cause of hypothyroidism, then iodine supplements provide no benefit and should not be used.

In fact, for some people with abnormal thyroid glands, too much iodine can cause or worsen hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism can be safely and effectively treated with the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levothroid, others).

(I have now lost the link I took the above from).

I totally agree with Shaws. Get tested for iodine before taking any.

In my expericience, the best thing to get rid of the scales is optimising your T3 levels. You have to be careful with creams and lotions because you never know what is in them. Anything you put on your skin will be absorbed, and there are some ingrédients you just Don't want Inside you!

My skin is dry too. Taking off socks and see white layer of dust on my legs. If i look close it is like tiny cracks or fush scales on my skin. I sort of did not connect that to thyroid issues :D

Hi I have very dry skin I have started armour last couple of weeks still on levo as well I was just wondering how much iodine is it you take to help?

LuckyKat profile image
LuckyKat in reply toAmber12345

Hi Amber,

I took 12.5mg a day for a year. At that point I became sufficient in iodine and I've cut right back. Still trying to determining my maintenance dose, but it'll be lower.

Too bad you can't stand oily things :( I find coconut oil good tho it does not leave oily feeling for long but maybe you would find that bad as well.

E45 for general use works for me, but if I get a troublesome patch I use Australian PawPaw ointment - I swear by it, fantastic for all sorts of skin problems. A bit expensive, but you can buy it on Amazon, eBay etc

Purely because it makes my skin look better, also dry and scaly, I was prescribed in UK ? E105 cream, you can buy it in a chemist, I now have a French equivalent with same ingredients, but didn't fin either helpful with the dryness although the itching seemed less.

Now more recently I have started using all 'Dove' products, for shampooing and apreshampoo (forgotten what its called in UK) as well as for washing/shower and then their body skin lotion. They have all helped better than any other make I've used. My hair still comes out but it seems to have thickened a little more, at least you can't see my scalp through it now! My dry wrinkled skin at top of breastbone has also smoothed out a little and is not scaly anymore. My armsand shins skin is also much less scaly, itchy. I live in hopes perhaps the vitiligo will go away and my skin cells, ? melatonin, will also improve :-)

I had terrible problems with dry skin and my skin is very sensitive too and over the years I tried so many things from very expensive creams to strange concoctions and In the end what works best for me is using baby head to toe wash, it's really mild and inexpensive, and great for washing off make up (I use Tesco's one) and I use an exfoliating glove every day. I don't scrub my skin off with it but just a quick rub really , especially areas prone to dry skin and then moisturise with Cetraben cream which I get off the Dr. You can get it on prescription or buy it from the chemist. The tub lasts a very long time. So this very cheap method works best for me anyway. I used to look like a lizard my skin was so awful and my skin now is great, soft, blemish free and I find quick daily exfoliating is key. Good luck finding what works for you, hope this helps. As others have said getting the right meds will help too.
