Hi I have been diagnosed with under active thyroid for 22 years. My dose is 200mcg levothyroxine.

So am I correct in thinking that to take a 25mg tablet of T3, I should reduce levothyroxine to 100mcg?

Thanks to anyone who replies 😊

Hello Carolanne74,

Welcome to our forum.

T3 is 3 x stronger than Levothyroxine (T4) .

Therefore 25mcg T3 is equivalent to 75mcg T4.

Carolanne, It's better to introduce T3 gradually in 6.25mcg (quarter tablet) increments to see how you tolerate it. If you are optimally dosed on Levothyroxine reduce dose by 37.5mcg for every 12.5mcg T3 introduced. Hold at 12.5mcg for 6 weeks and check FT3 level before increasing further.

Ok thanks are there side effects if I start with 25mcg of T3?

Carolanne, yes, that's why I advised you to start lower. It can cause palpitations, racing heart, headaches, tremors, jitteriness, anxiety and diarrhoea if you take too much, or if you introduce too much, too quickly. If your FT3 is in the top third of range 25mcg is likely to send your FT3 considerably over range.

Hi Carolanne.........when my Endo prescribed 10mcgs of T3 for me I was taking 100 mcgs Levo T4.He told me to reduce that by 25 to 75 mcgs to allow for the T3....... just for comparison.

I hope you feel better with the addition of T3.

The addition of T3 for me gave me more energy and motivation + a rise in body temperature. Hope it works for you.

Can I ask how long you were taking 10mcg of T3 before you felt the benefits? Thanks

in reply toSassyAF

From memory I think it was very quickly. Unfortunately I did have a remaining problem I didn't seem to be able to solve which was muscular pain so at the moment I have discontinued my T3/T4combo and am doing a three month trial on Armour thyroid which I have to buy myself but my Endo has agreed to monitor me on.I have just raised my dose from 1 1/4 grains to 1 1/2 grains and so far so good.My legs are more comfortable and I am now concentrating on losing weight, which is also underway.

I do think though that the addition of T3 was the beginning of my recovery after many years on T4only and I wish you good luck.Hopefully you will begin to notice the difference soon.

Hi My treatment has followed yours and exactly like you I've felt warmer after being so cold for so long. My hangover feeling in the morning has gone and I definitely have more motivation and energy. Like you though I still have shoulder neck pain and my stamina in low so still not up to speed especially now ive got to lose weight .Im 4 stone over my normal weight. Ive only just gone on combo so don't want to change too quickly as its wonderful to at last be feeling a bit better. How long were you on combo for and why did you decide to try Amour. Do you mind telling me hoe much the Armour costs you or is it prescribed by your endo ?

in reply tovandewalle0

I have been prescribed T3/T4 combo since March 2014,but have only recently started my trial of Armour to see whether how I get on with it and will see my Endo in November after blood tests.I sent abroad for it myself and paid about £55 ( sterling conversion from dollars).

However,I know that the price is rising and is likely to be around £70 + if I send for more soon.

My Endo is unable to prescribe it.
