Very confused about NDT

If your own Thyroxine is low and levothyroxine is introduced but T3 remains low possibly because of conversion of T4 to T3 issues how does NDT benefit? doesn't the conversion issue remain?

Supplemented NDT provides the T 3 that your body needs so the conversion problem becomes a non-issue. In other words, no conversion is required since NDT contains the T 3.

Thank you for that. Regards

Siskin, adding T3 to T4 and the T3 in NDT overcomes the conversion issue and the oral T3 will also help stimulate better T4 to T3 conversion.

Thanks Clutter, I understand how adding T3 to T4 helps but what I can't get my head around is how taking NDT alone improves things, as I believe the ratio between T4/T3 in humans is 80:20 (4:1) and in NDT 38mcg T4 to 9 mcg T3.

(4.2:1) which does not appear that great (Maths not so hot 60 yrs since school)

So still trying to get my head around why NDT alone appears to over come conversion problems or is there something I am not understanding about NDT?

Siskin, NDT 4.2:1 is pretty damn close to the 4:1 ratio. Normal levels/ratio are estimated in healthy people but people not in good health won't convert in the same ratios. Different levels of thyroid function and ability to convert will all impact on levels and ratios.

I have no thyroid and take 75/100mcg T4 and 30mcg T3, which is what I need to suppress TSH, and maintain FT3 4.5-5.0. Therefore, the T4:T3 ratios in NDT won't suit me at all and I'd need to add T3 to NDT. A good converter may find the T3 in NDT too much at 4.2:1 and need to add T4 to it.

I am glad you asked that Siskin. I have been wondering if you have a T4 to T3 conversion problem and so produce too much rT3, will the T4 in NDT will still cause you to produce to much rT3?

My guess is that the answer is yes but as you will be getting some T3 in the NDT it counteracts this somewhat. Is this right Clutter or should some T3 be added to the ND?

I am sorry but I have too much brain fog to manage the ratios!!!, probably need some T3 ;-)
