Radioactiv iodin

Hi,

Since sept last year I have hyperthyroid T4-69.

I'm allergic for carb and propy. I have to do radioactiv iodin.

Is anyone have experience or other way to help to heal my thyroid. I'm on gluten free and dairy free diet, made a huge different and I feel a lot better.

Welcome to the forum, Zeeeeee.

Unless your gluten-free and dairy-free diet has substantially reduced your T4 levels I think the only options for someone allergic to Carbimazole and PTU are radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery, both of which will cause hypothyroidism.

Have you had T4 tested recently?

And given a choice between radioactive iodine and surgery, I would opt for surgery every time. The radio active iodine is the easy choice for the doctors but if you search on here there are several people who rue the day they agreed to take it.

Do your research carefully and be aware that there are other drawbacks.

I have to do more research here. I just signed up this evening to get some help advise. Thank you

Yes, T4 was 69 a month ago, I just had a blood test this week. I will know the result tomorrow.

Zeeeeee, If it's not <30 you're going to have to consider RAI or thyroidectomy.

Hi Clutter,

I got my blood test today T4 92. Not good at all.

Zeeeeee, no it isn't at all good. If you have any sign of thyroid eye disease (TED) ask for thyroid surgery rather than RAI. RAI is contraindicated for TED and can make the condition worse.

Seeing the endoc Saturday. I think I rather to do surgery then RAI until then just searching.

Thank you Clutter

Zeeeeee, I had surgery followed by high dose RAI for thyCa. Surgery was straightforward but there are risks of damage to the vocal chords and parathyroid glands. I had no ill effects from RAI but there are 21 day restrictions on contact to protect other people particularly children and pregnant women while levels of radioactivity reduce.

My sister had RAI ablation for Graves but it has made her TED worse. Otherwise she's been fine since and didn't have any adverse effects.

Thyroidectomy will make you immediately hypothyroid, you'll be given Levothyroxine the morning after surgery.

It can take weeks/months for RAI to cause hypothyroidism and can initially make you more hyper as the destroyed cells dump hormone into the blood stream.

Research both via the HU search function and Google so you can discuss options with your endo on Saturday.

Hi zeeeeee, you could read up about iodine (not the radioactive kind). It's been used successfully to treat hyperthyroidism. There's a lot of information out there but a good place to start is healyourselfathome.com

Also Dr Eric O at naturalendocrinesolutions.com has some self-help natural remedies for Graves, which might help to get your T4 down.
