Iodine injection for CT scan should I be worried. ?

I like to thank you for such a friendly, caring group of people .

I am having a CT scan today, reading the leaflet that came with the appointment I may be injected with iodone so my veins show up clearly in the scan. I did a quick Google and understand this can cause hypo or hyper . I am hypo taking 150 mcg feeling unwell but hope it is partly due to a large ovarian cyst the scan is one of the tests before a hysterectomy. Has anyone had a iodine based contrast media. Did it cause any more problems

Contrast scans use not iodine itself but a compound which contains an iodine atom. This is injected into your veins and for a short time passes through your bloodstream where the contrast scan can then be done. Very quickly your liver/kidney will break down the compound and release iodide (not iodine) into the urine and you'll get rid of it quickly. Only a very small chance of the iodine so released having any effect on your thyroid activity.

Hi Jacqueline - I only know that my niece, who has auto-immune conditions and who I think is about to be diagnosed with Hashimotos, discovered she was very seriously allergic to iodine following iodine injections to discover her kidney function. I don't know what other chemicals or the type of iodine was in the injections but she was told by the hospital to avoid iodine as much as possible as she had a very serious reaction . I am sorry I have no more details but it is something to be aware of. Good Luck and Best wishes, Jax
