Donna, it sounds like post nasal drip webmd.boots.com/cold-and-fl...

Donnanomore,

It sounds like post nasal drip which many members suffer including myself.

I am prescibed Nasonex nasal spray which I use twice a day.

Post nasal drip is listed under "nose, mouth and throat symptoms of hypothyroidism" on ThyroidUK website.

I just thought this was I don't have very good imbue system. Any good tips on the neti-pot do I really have to use distilled water, is boiling not good enough?

I use xlear nasal spray which helps, I buy from Amazon. Also a Neti pot. Where can I buy Varcho Veda?

in reply to Lynneypin

Varcho Veda is a mix of essential oils that you add to salt & water in the neti pot, formulated to sooth the mucus membranes. Unfortunately it looks out of stock atm but if you email them, they will let you know when it is in.

I have bought several items from this website.

Another vote for the net pot although my husband uses a bottle system he purchased in Boots. He suffered with post nasal drip and drove himself (and me) mad constantly clearing his throat. It took a bit of getting used to, apparently it's a very odd feeling at first as you squeeze water into one nostril and it comes out from the other. In the beginning it felt to him like there was a blockage and the water went in but seemed to have to break through a barrier before it emerged the other side. Using this system has been miraculous for him and he very soon lost all his annoying symptoms, which have never returned. He now only has to use the system once or twice a week.

I've got that bottle thing ( can't for the life of me remember what it's called) as well as a neti pot - started with the neti pot.

I noticed while I was waiting to collect a prescription that the Lloyds pharmacy at my hospital had the squeezey bottle kit on the shelves so I figured that the ENT department must recommend them or prescribe them. Think I preferred the squeeze bottle to be honest but I can't remember why.

Found it - amazon.co.uk/NeilMed-Origin...

Definitely post nasal drip. I started with it after a collapse 13 years ago. The doctors gave me Nasonex but it irritated the condition, and up until recently, (the past 2 years now I think), I've been using Sterimar which is a non steroid spray plus I was changed from using Lansoprazole which I had been taking double the maximum dose a day for over 10 years! I now use Omeprazole, 20mg, twice a day.

Use the Sterimar-It's 100% natural sea water, twice a day.

I find that sometimes I can have a choking fit which can be brought on by smells/pollen, etc and then can't stop choking up to half an hour or so. When this happens, it sets off the PND. Best thing out is to blow your nose and try to relax, though it's not easy when you're choking!

in reply to Athena13

Thanks I will try :)

Since I've been using it the choking has been reduced a heck of a lot, and even more now that I am on the Omeprazole. :)

Athena13 - PPI's is a short-term treatment - usually for only 8 weeks. After that deficiencies cause problems :-)

Athena13 profile image
Athena13 in reply to Marz

Ooh, thanks for that-I was initially treated for acid reflux, totally wrong. I kept telling them what was happening but the trouble was that I was coughing and choking that much I was being sick so many times because of it. People assumed I was a heavy smoker I coughed that much and I have never smoked in my life....I'm much more myself now that I am on the Sterimar and Omeprazole as I said. Only occasionally will I have a bout of coughing and choking.

This and the rest of my symptoms which would appear to be an underactive thyroid were triggered by a collapse where I banged my head 13 years ago.

How long have you been on Omeprazole ? - a drug that made 13 billion dollars for the Big Pharma back in 2010 :-) there are so many natural solutions....

Low B12 can effect the Vagus nerve and cause persistant coughing - what is your level ????

in reply to Marz

I was on omep for around 5 years changed last year to lansoprazole . I've a hiatis hernia now I'm trying nexium do u think it's a connection with clearing throat my b12 was around 600 last week

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to

Are you supplementing B12 ? Hiatus Hernia ? My understanding is that acid reflux is caused by LOW acid. Proteins cannot be broken down as they need acids - so hang around in the stomach fermenting and then funnelling upwards into the oesophagus and causing weakness around the valve.

Have you tried more natural solutions rather than a drug that causes deficiencies ?

in reply to Marz

Have just started to take b 12 this week . I have no idea what I could take for my stomach I would appreciate any advice an thank you for the reply

Donnanomore,

My gp's had me taking all three of those PPI's for over 20 years for 'acid reflux' du to A hiatus hernia. I weaned myself off them at the end of last year and my reflux has magically cured itself. To begin with I did have an ocassional attack during the three months it took to come off the drug, for which I took Gaviscon. For the past six months I have taken nothing and have had no further problems. I do Still have the hernia which they will not operate on as I am too heavy. I am hoping the T3 my endo has added to my levo will help address this problem.

If you wish to stop taking PPI's you should do so very slowly. I took three months but have read that it can, or should?, take up to six months.

I have suffered from this for years and years and have tried many, many things for it. My GP went with Post Nasal Drip and prescribed Beconase - I too have used a NetiPot. That does help. But I don't think it's caused by stuff from my nose.

However, when I get the throat clearing I definitely feel that the mucous is coming literally from the area of my larynx/voice box - as if it's being generated there rather than running down the back of my throat from my nose. I can constantly produce mucous as I throat clear - sometimes thick and sticky.

There have been other suggestions - maybe acid reflux, maybe my blood pressure medication, maybe my thyroid. I have gone through really bad periods of it lasting months. I have used acid suppressing medication, but that did nothing.

I have had some success using antihistamines (Loratidine works best for me - you may have to try and see what works for you) and I can get a good result with a half dose taken at night, but it lasts 24 hours so that's good. I have also had a good result using cough syrups and the best are any with Dextromethorphan in, but it does have side effects which mean not everyone gets on with it; it makes me feel queasy, but sometimes I have been so desperate I don't care.

I feel there is a thyroid connection but nobody seems to take that on board, so I've had to try to deal directly with trying to stop the mucous.

Hi, I take a spoonful of sesame seed oil on waking, don't swallow it but swish it around your mouth for 5 mins. This draws all the mucus from the nose and throat. Then spit it out and use a tongue brush for the tongue. Do this for a few days. Since doing this I have not had the need or urge to clear my throat. It is cheap and works, well for me anyway, particularly when my sinus's are playing up. Worth giving it a try.

It could well be post nasal drip. Been there meself - nasty! And difficult to shift. One of those many things that attacks you when you're run down. Have you had a hard-to-shift cold or chest infection recently?

It could also be good ol' fashioned hayfever, given the time of year. I do what you describe most mornings, until the cetirizine kicks in

in reply to

Yes I did ave a bad chest at Xmas my daughter was in hospital I think I was very run down an I can't seem to shift this now

Constant throat clearing can be a sign of reflux. If it is, it needs to be established what is behind the reflux, e.g. H. Pylori bacterial infection that causes ulcers or a weak valve from the stomach, to get appropriate treatment.

..or B12 Deficiency causing problems with the Vagus Nerve.....

I always found that whenever I ate I would have a lump in my throat and constant cough/clearing. When I found I had Hashimotos I went off all grains and wheat and when I did that after a week or so I started noticing that the lump in my throat was gone and so was the cough. If I do eat something with wheat it comes back.

Allergies too could cause it but I had been tested for allergies and they said I did not have any. Hope this helps

in reply to

I'm the same I can't eat choclate or cream anymore it's so bad afterwards I will try stopping wheat etc

Can also be a sign of candida, which often appears as chronic sinus inflammation/infection. Candida is often symptomatic of hypothyroidism, usually brought on by previous antibiotic use. Post nasal drip can also be symptomatic of allergic reaction to just about anything - food, mold, pollen... your own thyroid hormone and tissue... etc.

A good probiotic is helpful, and in any case your gut flora needs balance, no matter what ails you (or doesn't, for that matter). Vitamin C, quercetin, and also turmeric/curcumin are very helpful as well, particularly for the liver detox pathways, which are essential in cases of allergic reactions and autoimmune disorders. Fermented foods will also assist in the gut, which is also implicit for autoimmune problems.

On a more energetic/spiritual level, beyond what's happening physically in the body - getting to more emotional root causes - here are things to consider and address:

-rejection issues

-needing/wanting to be alone; conversely being left alone, feeling too lonely

-difficulty speaking your truth, feeling unheard

-unable to express yourself - fear that something you say will displease someone

-parental issues, punishment for expressing your emotions

- something stuck in your throat, something you need to say - you need to get it out. if you can't say it to the person/people, get a journal and write it. it needs to be expressed.

Hope this helps!

Hi just started asking tumeric last week can u advise me on a really good probiotic

1133 profile image
1133 in reply to

Sure - there are lots to choose from. I take Garden of Life RAW Probiotics Women 50 & Wiser. I like it a lot (even though I'm still a few years away from 50 :-) ) - here's the amazon. uk link - amazon.co.uk/RAW-Probiotics...

It's a little pricier than other probiotics, but there are plenty of others that cost less (with fewer strains) that would be helpful. Drinking kefir every day is also a nice way to add more probiotics/fermented food to your diet, though I'd definitely take probiotic supplement in addition to drinking kefir.

in reply to 1133

Oh great thank you I did try Keifer once but it made me feel really I'll so I stopped . I do suffer with my stomach don't know if mabe I've been on meds to long . But thanks again :)

1133 in reply to

You're welcome. It's common to have digestive problems with low thyroid, because generally we don't have enough stomach acid, so things don't digest well. This is also problematic because it allows candida overgrowth to occur. Taking amino acids helps a lot with this, while addressing the thyroid issue.

When your stomach bothers you try any of the following:

- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar in a mug of hot water (Iike for tea), add cinnamon and raw honey. It's delicious. Enjoy it either 20-30 minutes before a meal, or after your meal. Helps with digestion.

- Betaine HCL with your meal.

- Digestive enzymes with your meal.

Recommended amino acids:

-Glycine

-Proline

(alternatively, eating lots of bone broth and/or gelatine will give you nice amounts of glycine and proline)

-Platinum Plus - (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) amazon.co.uk/238/dp/B008PUB...

Hi 1133 , I've just finished a course about tackling the emotional issues you describe. The course leader said exactly the same to me! Great to see you mentioning this. He says it's the underlying cause of my thyroid problem. Interesting!

1133 profile image
1133 in reply to sueoathall

Hi Sue, thanks :-) This is what my occupation is (was before I went on sabbatical for healing myself, following a series of traumas a couple years ago). I'm also very glad to see that there are others educating people about this. Body follows mind. It's very important to remember. In the case of autoimmune disorders (like Hashimotos, for example) - the body attacking itself - the thing to consider is the thoughts. Are they self destructive? Is there a self-critic always saying mean things to herself? Mindfulness is key in recovery. Learning to love the self, accepting the self unconditionally is absolutely necessary for recovery. Again, can't overstate this: Body follows mind.

Hi Donna, I had post nasal drip for years and would cough for half an hour every time I ate. I went on a diet for Hashimotos eliminating all grains especially wheat and the post nasal drip went away, the cough went away, I can breath through my nose which I have not been able to do for years. I went to a specialist when I was in my early 20's for that. In my teens i constantly had issues, I am now 53 and only now have I been free from that issue as well as losing weight, it is just coming off me now. Worth a try, you never know. I had one specialist tell me that i had food in my sinuses, well duh, coughing all the time is bound to put some food in the sinuses.
