Not feeling so great...

Hi guys,

I hope you are all as well as can be.

I'm after your opinions please...

I have an overactive thyroid and have been put on 20mg carbimazole and 50mcg levothyroxine.

In the last couple of days I have been feeling pretty rough, very tired and some cold symptoms.

I realised yesterday I had 2small mouth ulcers (they seem much better this morning) but I've never suffered with them before.

I also feel that I have a bit of a sore throat, nothing major but it's there. I know my endo said to look out for these things and if I got them I should stop the meds and get a blood test asap.

He did say though that it would be very very unlikely I had this problem so I'm unsure what to do, being the weekend I can't just pop to the docs and I don't know if it is serious enough for a&e. So I wondered what you all think about it, and what you think is best for me to do please?

Thanks in advance

Xx

Hi Charleyct

I have been on carbimazole for four years on and off, fortunately not had an adverse reaction. If you have a sore throat and mouth ulcers and feel poorly I would ask for a full blood count as carbimazole can interfere with the blood cells that fight infection.

Do not want to panic you it may be just a virus but better to be safe than sorry.

With it being the weekend you could phone NHS direct and explain to them that you are on carbimazole and your symptoms are concerning you.

Hope this helps

Sore throat while on carbimazole is a reason to call NHS Direct (or whichever is appropriate to you) or, if needed, attend A&E.

Do NOT delay. If you are suffering Agranulocytosis, it could be an emergency and you are not the best person to assess that.
