Armour?

Sorry if this question has been asked a 1000 times before, but I am really not sure I understand anything :-(

The STTM has made it very clear that Armour is no longer working, that Forest (back in 2009) reformulated it, without telling anyone, and that patients needed to switch to a brand of NDT not containing cellulose. Back in 2011/12, when I read the STTM posts, Erfa Thyroid was highly recommended.

Now, there seems to be a problem with Erfa, although the company denies it. Even STTM has labelled it problematic. So, now I wonder: is any brand of NDT working?

Lately, I have been considering going back on Armour, although I am not sure if it should be swallowed or chewed. The manufacturer claims it should be swallowed, but many claim it works better if chewed...

I'd appreciate any advice you could give me on this.

theCat, Armour has been re-reformulated since 2009 to address the absorption issues caused by the hard coating around the tablet during the original reformulation. Chewing was advised to break the hard coating before swallowing with water before the re-reformulation.

Armour and Erfa continue to work for most people although not everyone gets on with them. Don't take everything said on STTM as Gospel. The only way to see whether a brand suits you is to try it and see. NatureThroid and WP are supposedly hypoallergenic forms of NDT and many people seem to do well on them. They may be more affordable than Armour.

STTM list the ingredients in various brands of NDT in this link stopthethyroidmadness.com/a...

theCat, If you are switching to NDT you may find you need to try 2 or 3 brands before you find one which suits you. Thyroid-S and NatureThroid seem popular with members.

Thanks a lot!!!

I'm doing fine on ERFA.

Have you noticed a difference between the 30 and 60 mg pills on the one hand, and the 125 mg pills on the other? I seem to need more of the 125 mg pills, which makes me wonder if they contain different fillers...?

I have only taken the 30 and 60 pills, so I can't comment, I'm afraid. L

I am not sure if this will help but I have been on Armour for about 14 years now all the way through the old formula and the new and have had no problem at all.

Thanks, Lilian, that is good to know!

PS. Can I ask how much Armour you take, and how you take it (swallow, chew, sublingually)?

I take 4 grains, in morning an hour before breakfast and swallow, with some light green tea (no milk). I am now awake all day, without a hint of needing a nap, and go to bed at a normal adult time and sleep through the night (except for a trip to the loo but get right back to sleep afterwards). I can say that with Armour I am living a normal life once again. It did not happen over night though as I had to build up grandually and slowly, I started having good days and bad days (as opposed to every day bad days), then gradually the good days were more than the bad days. One day, about a year after starting I woke up and realised every day had been a good day.

Thanks, that's really helpful!
