New Red Tape, NHS Edocrinologist Needed.

Hi, I've just had a consultation with my GP where I told her that all the hypothyroid symptoms I was experiencing ,which she was treating with Levithyroxine to no avail, have improved to the point of giving me my life back since I've started taking NDT I import from NZ at the cost of around £200 a month.

I asked if I could switch to NDT as I know it can be prescribed on the NHS on a named patient basis but she said that she used to be able to do this a few years ago but now she has to write to a new body where I live, the Bromley Clinical Commissioning group, who decide based on money whether a GP is allowed to prescribe a drug for a patient in Bromley!

This means that, even if she argues that she thinks it's the best drug for me as I'm having great results with it, they can still deny her the right to prescribe it. I asked if I could be referred to an NHS endocrinologist if I can find one who prescribes NDT and she's willing to do this but said, even if a consultant prescribes NDT for me, if the Bromley CCG decline funding, I still won't receive it on the NHS unless the consultant is willing to allow the prescription to come from the hospital budget where he works. Scandalous!

So my question is, does anyone know of an NHS endocrinologist based in Bromley, South East London or hospitals in London such as Guys who have been known to prescribe NDT so my GP can refer me to them? I know there's a Private doctor list in the Thyroid UK pack but they're private and I can't afford them or afford to continue to import NDT from NZ. Thanks.

I have that list jools999 and some of the doctors and endos are national health too.

PM Louise Warvell (check spelling with admin) & get a copy asap. The waiting lists will probably be huge for a sympathetic endo on NH.

Jools999, email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org.uk for a list of NHS and private endos recommended by members. You will need to check with their offices whether they prescribe NDT.

There are much cheaper NDTs than that. Would you consider changing to a different one?

Yes. Just tried to fill out a private DR consultation form for Armour with paharmacy2uonline. Took ages to do but had to tick a box at the end for my medical concern and they didn't have one for hypothyroid. I called them and they said it's because their doctors only do consultations for certain things yet they sell Armour! #confused
