Drooping eyelid

I have noticed my left eyelid appears to be drooping more as each year goes by, could this just be a sign of ageing (am now 74) or a sign of thyroid eye disease, any comments much appreciated.

Of course our eyes do seem to reflect the aging process. Drooping eyelids can be a problem for many and it is my intuition that many Hypo people do lean back their heads to communicate - as their eyelids are lowered. I see it in interviews on TV :-( As all muscles of the body need good levels of T3 - including the muscles of the heart - then there could be a connection :-)

I have one eyelid that droops - sadly connected to the paraesthesia caused by the extraction of a wisdom tooth - yikes !!

My left eyelid drops .and i find that when i am under medicated it nearly shut.I do have TED, and my left eye is what they call a lazy eye which i had long before i had thyroid disease. Also if i m tired it seems to drop more.

That's interesting, I also had a Lazy Eye and looking around the web others are wondering if its connected to thyroid disease. I wonder how many of us on here have Lazy Eye ?

My eye lids also get droopy when tired. I agree with Marz that all muscles need thyroid.

I have also read that babies born with a lazy eye were exposed to low thyroid hormones in the womb - now where did I read that ??? !!!

It constantly surprises me how many things are connected, It would be fantastic if you were able to remember where you saw that as I would be very interested.

...sorry cannot find it ! I know I once found it as my step-daughter has so many Hypo symptoms and was born with a lazy eye which was operated on. At that time I was joining up all the dots and that was one of them. Will keep looking !

...and I still cannot find the information.... Hope your daughter is OK now. I don't think it is anything that mainstream medicine would agree about - so it would have been one of the less conventional sources of information. As you say interesting....

I have had a lazy eye since childhood .but of course the thyroid has not helped it much.

Joyia, thyroid eye disease (TED) usually presents with protruberant/bulging eyeballs as the eyelids retract rather than droop. Dry itchy eyes is often a symptom too.

Thanks everybody for your kind responses. Many moons ago I had Graves and at that time my eyes did protrube but after a partial thyroidectomy they gradually receded but not quite the beautiful eyes they were before I became ill, the drooping lid has come on over the years but seems to be getting worse, your comments are interesting.

Joiya, my left eyelid started drooping around a year ago, so I searched on the internet for a possible nutrient deficiency, and discovered it can be caused by a Manganese deficiency.

I've been taking 2 Manganese Chelate 200mg tablets (equivalent to elemental manganese 20mg) since. It took quite a few weeks to notice a difference, and then I forgot I had a droopy lid completely (kept taking the pills) until this week. I've had a fairly traumatic last four days, and not taken any of my supplements, and today I've noticed it's starting to droop slightly again.

So it appears that it takes quite a long time to fix the droopy lid, but it's then necessary to keep up the intake of manganese to keep the problem at bay.

Hope it works for you Joiya. :)

I will look into manganese, thanks for that.
