A perfect example of why FT3 should be tested...particularly during pregnancy.

I am feeling particularly miffed today following from the 'afterglow' of my nuclear medicine appt yesterday! Excuse the pun. It has triggered my anger and extreme disappointment again in a 26 year saga. I will try to keep this brief. I entered a debate with a youngish doctor (thinking he may understand a little more about thyroid levels, I mean this apt was at a major teaching hospital). I stated that I felt very disappointed by the endocrine profession as a whole..letting me my family and many thousands of patients down. I asked him "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT I AM NOT CELLULARLY HYPOTHYROID???".....Ha he chuckled "because you have a TSH under 0.5" he said!!! This made my blood boil in true thyroidian style. Just a little example...In 2006 during my pregnancy with my last child I was under an Endo, and professor in nuclear medicine, a GP and an obstetrician, any guesses who picked up that I was infact hypothyroid and needed more hormone?? ...Yes...the obstetrician!!!My TSH was<0.03!!! (good news for previous thyroid cancer apparently!!!) My FT4 was 16.4 (9.5-25.7)and my FT3 was 3.6 (3.9-6.7)but the 'specialists' in thyroid care did not even notice this as they did not sanction FT3 testing!!!! It was the obstetrician that contacted my endo in order to increase my dose of thyroxine therefore I had suffered for months, my poor poor baby had suffered and my previous thyroid cancer had not being suppressed at all as it is the T3 that suppresses the cancer...not the TSH as these silly doctors believe. Insist on FT3 testing ....please
