TSH Result

My Daughter has had her Thyroid tested, TSH only as that's all they apparently test in her area. She's always tired and cold. She's 26 and I'm Hypo (Hashi's)

TSH was 2.74 and told symptoms not thyroid related. She was asked to test again in a year. At what level is classified as Hypo please?

Angel, usually TSH over the top of the ref range which varies from area to area but typically between 4.5 and 6.0.

She hasn't had her FT3 or FT3 or antibodies tested. A couple of years ago she was put on iron for low iron levels. Maybe wise for her to have those tested again. Ny B12 and Folate was low 18mths ago B12 184 and Folate 3.1 but supplemented and they are back up now.

My Tsh is 2.54 and t4 12.6,low b12,vitd,folate and ferritin but my tpo came back 3 that was normal so does that suggest thyroid is fine ? What I'm saying is tpo accurate

Do you have the range for that T4? No, I wouldn't say your thyroid is fine. A TSH of 2.54 suggests that it's having to work rather hard for not much gain - that T4 is more than likely low. But you can't say anything for certain without seeing the FT3 - unless, of course, your TSH is in double figures! TPO test is accurate, but antibody levels vary, so one negative is not definitive. Also there are two antibody test : TPO and Tg, they should have tested both of them.

T4 range is 9-22,I've only had Tsh and t4 tested and a week later he tested too.

Well, your T4 is too low, then. It should be at least over mid-range - which is 15.5. So your FT3 is bound to be low because you haven't got much to convert. Doctors are such dunderheads they can't seem to work this out! What are you doing about your low B12 etc? Low B12 is dangerous because it can cause neurological damage.

No, i don't suppose he does. But once the loading doses are over, you can supplement yourself, you don't need him.

Hi Angle,my daughter was the same but because she had a baby 18months prior they also told her to retest in a year, but she went back after six months because here symptoms were no better and got put on thyroxin. She did tell the gp that I,her month has Hashimoto's,don't know if that made a difference. You need to push for everything.

As I said I have hashimoto's but even when the nurse tells the lab I'm on T3 only, they wont test beyond TSH.

In case it helps..they tested me for T4 and 3 when my levels were classed as hyperthyroid(TSH 0.05) my GP reduced meds and my levels came into in the right range and lab tested T4 only no T3.I think the testing labs decide what they test according to TSH level?

If you are hyper, they treat based on FT3 and FT4 ranges rather than TSH, and in my area at least (Wales], as you say, it seems the labs automatically test these if TSH is below a certain level. However, endo (not sure about GP) can order additional tests, even if levels are within range - for example, if you are still on a high dose of anti-thyroids.

Just a thought but has she had her ferritin levels checked, being cold and tired all the time is also a symptom of low iron. It might be worth asking the GP to test Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin as being low in any of them would affect the body's ability to utilise thyroid hormone effectively as well. She may be fine once all those are optimum.

Thank you for all your replies. She maybe low in iron as she was a couple of years ago. I'll ask her to get these tested.
