Hi,All I haven't been on here in awhile. I have a question firstly can anyone tell me what a NB Parathyroid Subtraction Scan Tc/MIBI is, and also what's the reason for it. I've got to admit it's worrying me sick. If anyone has had this or can explain to me the reason for it I would be really grateful. Thank you in advance.

Parathyroid
Gemini, Hyperparathyroidism may be suspected if you have high serum calcium and the test is to check whether there is an adenoma (benign tumour) on one of your 4 parathyroid glands causing it.
"...2) in the Tc-MIBI parathyroid scan, the use of KCLO4 results in a rapid and relevant technetium thyroid clearance, improving the quality of MIBI images and making the visualization of parathyroid adenomas, particularly those located behind the thyroid gland, easier."

Hi Clutter it's nice to hear from you again, I've been through that many tests for one thing or another that I don't want to go through anymore that are not nessesary . I had no reply today from anyone on the forum ,so I spoke to Marz, she put a site on for me to read, and I don't know if I've got this right but it's nothing to do with the Thyroid. From what I could tell even with that test and a ultra sound they still can't tell without what they call 16min surgery . I may have it wrong as I'm not that good at all this, but I am worried and don't know if I should have this radioactive tracer,if it's not going to show anything. Also can you tell me if they tell your calcium level from your TSH level. Sorry to rant on but you know me. Worrier
Gemini, parathyroids are totally different to the thyroid. They're so named because of their proximity to the thyroid.
Calcium levels can't be determined from your TSH. A Calcium blood test is required. A high parathyroid hormone test and high calcium test usually indicate hyperparathyroidism.
You should ask your consultant or GP why you are being sent for the scan. They should explain the tests they are recommending and why thy feel they are necessary. If they suspect hyperparathyroidism the likely cause is an adenoma which will mean removal of the affected parathyoid gland. Parathyroids regulate calcium and high calcium can lead to bladder, kidney and gallbladder stones.
The test you've been recommended seems to be able to see whether there is an adenoma on a parathyroid gland hiding behind the thyroid gland.
